As much as i have loved some of romeu's games in a saints shirt, i feel he needs to dropped along with lemina. I would be tempted to start with armstrong and peh
To be fair Sigurdsson cost £45m more than JWP. The Leicester game will be a good measure. Shame Vardy got sent off today.
Not long woke up and not surprised that we lost, good to see Ings get off the mark. On page 16 btw and this place is embarrassing as **** ffs
For me id go with this, Macca; Soares Yoshida Vestergaard Bertrand; PeH Armstrong Lemina; Redmond Ings Ely Gunn, Stephens, Targett, JWP, Long, Gabbiadini, Austin
JWP sucks on the right. It’s not worth playing him there just for set pieces. Has to be Moi on the left and Redmond on the right for me. I think JWP has something to offer the team, not just with his free kicks but his ability to spread the ball around and control play but it is hard to justify a permanent place for him as long as he is a liability on defense and can’t score. Think we will just have to rotate center mids game to game. I don’t think we will be able to pick a formation/tactic style and dictate play regardless of opponent. We’re going to need extra help on defense on some games, more goals in others, and sometimes more possession.
A liability in defence like giving away the ball and cheap fouls in dangerous areas you mean?, he also scored more goals (4) than any of his rivals in midfield last season. Lemina scored 1 Romeu scored 1 Pierre scored 1 Redmond scored 1 Davis scored 3
No more like being too lightweight and a lousy tackler, in addition to being weak in the air and having questionable positioning at times. He has to be better in attack than Romeu, because he plays a different role. You don’t want JWP playing defensive mid because of his aforementioned suckiness. You don’t want Davis starting, either. Basically we sucked last year, so that’s a ridiculous baseline to use in the first place. We bought Armstrong because we needed help. Armstrong plays JWP’s natural position, so he will have to battle it out. PEH needs a place, too. You can keep jamming JWP on the right if you want, but he’s not very good there. And it also means moving Redmond somewhere, who has been very good on the right and rather blah in the center. He is not a bad player, and he works hard and canperhaps still improve with experience. But he will have to earn his spot. I don’t know if it’s on the right or the center, that is for Hughes to figure out.
its between him and Redmond on the right and most of what you say about Prowse also applies to Redmond. Main difference is Redmond has pace and ball control and Prowse first touch passing and delivery. I think Prowse's natural position is the right and like today where he was heavily involved in every single chance we had first half, he usually plays well there. if you want to argue he's poor in that position you mightve chosen a game where he wasn't competing for MotM while playing there...
As you say, Redmond has the pace and a bit more trickery to get past players. JWP actually keeps the ball better and can dictate the game flow a bit more. Those are skills kind of wasted a bit on the right side. But the bottom line is neither player was very good last year and they have a lot to prove. Aside from a decent 20 minute spell to start the second half, the link up play between midfield and the front line was still bad today. Redmond was on the right for some or all of that spell, I believe. We were outplayed today. No outfield player, with perhaps the exception of Ings should feel like they cemented a first team spot.
I would like to see us play: McCarthy Cedric Vestergaard Yoshida Bertrand Lemina. Hojbjerg Sims Armstrong. Elyounoussi Ings I doubt Hughes will give Sims a go in the stsrting line up but would love him to be given the same time we have given Ward Prowse.
We will just have to agree to disagree on the subject of JWP especially if you compare him to Redmand who is a waste of space at the moment
He also produced the funniest match threads of the season. No offence to @fatletiss , but there's only so many Star Wars jokes an adult can endure... sorry, I meant 'enjoy', not 'endure'. Freudian slip.
Again opinions, but Redmond has been one of our betters players this year from the two games I’ve seen. You sure you’re not watching re-runs from last year?
Reading threads about the game on other boards and site, and not many are complimentary about Mark Hughes and the style of football being produced. For what it is worth, SFC played brilliant football under Adkins that was developed further by Pochettino and Koeman. Since then, the footballing has gone into reverse. SFC deserve a manager with a footballing philosophy, not one where the side gets 5 yellows.
