To be fair from a selfish point of view, be great if we played some 'home' games at the Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta in say early March or November time...just the perfect time to visit my daughter & grandchildren

Presumably as a means to give the league winners a better chance, they changed the way the qualifying rounds work in both Europey and CL...now there's a path for league champions and a separate path for the other allocations, which guarantees a minimum of eight spots in the group stage for the champions.

One of the few changes made to preference the best teams in small leagues, really; top four in the Prem now immediately qualify for the group stage (used to be that 4th had to play a qualifying round), but the team in 7th/cup winner has a tougher road.
