You also get a major increase in footfall when a side gets to a major cup semi-final and challenging at the top end of the table!
In regards to funding. McInnes and O'Driscoll had to make huge cuts in spending and in salaries - FFP Lee Johnson squad wages are in the region of 20.9 million. McInnes wages were half that. The situation was again different for Steve Cotterill. The situations are so different that it is a nonsense to say each Manager was given the same chance.
Let me set my record straight by saying that my comment about LJ having to win after his pre-match statement was never intended as a slight on our manager but rather a tongue in cheek response to the kind of things we would expect him to say. I have never really been an LJ believer and was disappointed at his appointment. We are going in to his 3rd year at the helm and although we have had some exciting moments under his control I believe this is the season where he really needs to show us all his ability to manage at this level. Judging him on individual signings and trying to decide if the current squad is his, or just the leftovers from some previous regime, doesn't cut it for me in the quest to decide whether he is the man to take us forward. All teams go through changes every season and sometimes the departures have more affect on how the team performs than new signings, and we must all realise that pre-season friendlies aren't exactly a good way to analyze performances. The only true measure of our ability to weather any storm must surely be our results and we can't fall in to the usual trap of making excuses. This is Lee's season of accountability for me and I wish him well because if he does his job well my team does the same. I expect and applaud the positive statements but at some point the actions have to surpass the words and only when that happens will Lee stand a chance of redemption in the eyes of many of his detractors.
Bollocks will you, if we lose the next two you will be saying “told you” and screaming like a sick child about it. And what is footfall? your like the gift that keeps giving, I also chuckle reading your comments on Facebook, you’re like the worlds biggest village idiot
These managers that didn't have the same chance are where now exactly? The best I can see is McInnes at Aberdeen, but that is in Scotland!! Me and you disagree on most things....So I will leave it there....But I will say, IMO, the managers you mentioned, if they had the funds of LJ, wouldn't make anything better than there already is.......again that's my opinion!!
Not sure about that 1For, SC spent £2million on Kodija and we made zillions. Compare that with the millions spent on Engvall and Djuric - let alone the other 30plus signings. Like you said, just my opinion.
Their brief was different to SC & now LJ , theirs was to see out high contract players and try to stabilise the club until such time as we could start again , it’s also the reason SL won’t buy high wage players now , we now buy younger , hungrier players in an attempt to increase their value and if necessary sale them at a profit , to reinvest.
LJ took Reid , who was worth £500k tops last season and sold him for £10m this , that’s not a bad return in 1 year.
When we tried it the other way we ended up bottom of league 1 , looking over our shoulder we invade we joined the gas in league 2 , I know which I prefer.
Going back to original point of the thread , what else could he have said The ones that don’t like him will pick holes whatever he says. I would have been surprised if he’d said anything different.
Villa with all there so say funds wanted to pay the price....we did well getting that for him....who knows, LJ may have had something to do with that.......then brought Tammy in who was even better. It's how it pans out sometimes......I agree, LJ & co have brought in a few duds....many managers do the same thing..it happens. Still, the most important thing for me currently is that we have been competing well......but I also understand that we all want more.. I will be moaning with you, if progress isn't made
Your point was every Manager has the same chance. I simply pointed out if a Manager has 50% less resource at his disposal his opportunities cannot be the same. I made no point regarding their Managerial acumen.
Cotterill bought very very well Ayling, Freeman, Kodija, Smith and Wilbraham and Agard and Little were sold close to what they cost. He did get in El Abd mind.
I said, every manager SL has taken on....Certain companies I may buy shares from, others I wouldn't trust.......SL has employed a few managers, it seems that SL trusts LJ with such funds...That was my point!!
LJ - in Press Conference end of last season - 'I HAD to play Reid up front early season, all my strikers were injured'. Nothing more than pure luck did Reid ever play up front. And in January, they were all fit along with the stellar loan of Dionny, LJ went back to picking the big men. Results then tell the story. Back to the Boro game. Is Bailey Wright fit ? If he is, and Baker and Webster are as well I wonder if LJ might play them in a three. I don't rate Bailey Wright much as a CH or RB but right side of a back 3 might just see the best of him.
We can all find quotes to back our view , what isn’t in question , whether by luck or planning , LJ turned a player that was worth £500k to one worth £10m in one season.
