I'm talking about a specific window after Leicester won the EPL. We brought in Wanyama, for sure, in that window but spunked £56.4 million away when the right quality player could have potentially turned our eventual 2nd place into 1st.
@Spurlock need some help keeping the glass half empty mate? @Dier Hard your 'left field' player looks to be Leon Bailey. Make of that what you will.
At this stage I'm beginning to think it might be a good idea. Can he drop a bit deeper to play at CM?
As DH said it was almost impossible to get a striker of the quality needed who was content to play a few games unless he was paid an extortionate amount of money which we really could not afford. Salah tbh was nothing really special at that time. Janssen, who, just like van Nistelrooy, had scored a lot of goals in the Dutch league appeared to be an ideal purchase as he was not well paid and was prepared to fight for a place. Although his attitude was first class, it just did not happen for him with us. Torres and Shevchenko were similar at Chelsea, except they cost a lot more money and wanted far larger pay packets.
Pleasure is all mine. I have a few days off from work which coincide rather nicely with the end of this most productive and exciting transfer window. It's as though the powers knew you'd need my help getting that fecker @Dier Hard to stop being so optimistic I'll stick around until Thursday night then I'm afraid I'm off. Rants and essays incoming.
Hindsight is a wonderful gift, at the time 99% of Spurs fans were excited about their signings, Spurs even done an announcement video for Nkoudou where they showed multiple tweets from Spurs fans saying "announce Nkoudou". If Chelsea had hindsight they wouldn't have spunked £60m on Morata or £40m on Bakayoko. Teams make bad signings, it's part and parcel of the game. To say we should've spent the money better is too easy to say, I don't remember anyone at the time of Janssen and GK's signings saying "these are poor, we should've signed player X".
For the PL, mostly yes. For any cup the luckiest of the best 5 or 6 teams usually wins it. Spurs won the first ten cup finals they played in over a period of 80 years. Spurs lost the last eight FA cup semi finals they played in over more than 20 years. The first was good luck and the second bad luck. There is no other plausible explanation.
Other than Son playing as a LWB and failing to produce a shot on target from the 30th minute onward against United, no, there are no other plausible explanations.
I'm whining about the next step. Can't sit on our laurels. I'm glad we invested in the future and bought Alli and Dier like @Dier Hard has stated. When we were doing that we were at a different stage. They came good and we should build on it..not stop. However I also don't believe we should be buying someone who will come good in 3 seasons or so...that won't help us this year. The type of players I am talking about are the ones you know are good. For example let's say a player on Aubemyang's level. You knew what Arsenal were getting and he hit the ground running. You just know the type of players that will do that. They don't have to be 'world class' but a level below which we should be in the market for, especially now that the wage ceiling has increased. People seem to keep on forgetting that it's the success on the pitch that matters. What do you think needs to be done to help us tackle getting to the next level in this coming season? because I can't see beyond the fact that we need to purchase players that will be pushing to be starters.
think that's the worst reasoning i've ever heard. If the same thing keeps happening i wouldn't put that down to bad luck. I'd say you were the best side and handled the games properly for the first 10 cup finals. If theres no explanation and it's down to luck, then there clearly is something going wrong as the top 6 win the FA cup and League cup more often than the 100s of different teams that enter the competition
Not really, case in point Grealish - I seem to be one of the only fans who really want this to happen. If he signs I imagine there will be a lot of fans shrugging their shoulders at it. Many on twitter are boiling piss at the fact he's potentially signing, the usual response is "he's a ****ing Championship player FFS!" completely forgetting the fact that they idolise Dele, who was signed from League One... People more than entitled to their opinions on new signings, I just find it weird that people suddenly say "they knew" a player was going to be bad, a year or two after said player(s) have been bad. Genuinely don't remember fans being disappointed when we signed Janssen and Nkoudou for example, both had really promising reputations.
I have opinions about all that as do most fans. But that's all they are. I don't have s track record of making s huge improvement to a club like Levy has. So his choices are likely to be better on average than yours or mine.
One of the reasons no-one complained when we bought the likes of Dele and Dier is that they cost absolute pittance. A club of our stature can easily afford a 'flutter' of up to £15m on a player every single window much in the same way United and Chelsea can afford a £40m flutter. Sometimes they work (above), sometimes they don't (GKN, Llorente, N'Jie). The fact that the likes of Alfie Mawson were apparently available for that amount yet we consider it beneath us to take a flutter is farcical. It isn't the lack of marquee signings that bothers me, it's the total lack of humility. The same lack of humility that prevents us from just cutting our losses on dross like Sissoko, Janssen, GKN and Aurier and just moving on.
I was fuming when we signed GKN. I concede defeat over Janssen though. That boy confuses me to this day.
The point is that a match between the top 6 is about a 50 50 chance. We beat Man Utd quite easily in the League and deservedly lost to them in the Cup. If the results had been reversed would that mean we were a better team? What if they were and we had beaten Chelsea in the final but lost the League game at the Bridge? We would have won the Cup and finished fifth in the League. Would that have been better or worse?
