It is when you consider that a spurs supporting mate of mine said that Trippier is only on around £40 k a week. Like I said, serious mis management has put us in the position of not being able to strengthen when needed.

Yup. Same problem Arsenal used to have. Lots of average players on relatively high wages they won’t get offered elsewhere and top players on relatively low wages that other clubs can easily beat.

I still wish we’d bought Theo Walcott when we supposedly had the chance. Too late now, I know. But that’s the sort of signing we should have been looking to make imo.

But that’s the point. We didn’t have a chance because Everton offered way more than we could pay under our wage structure. Similar to Promes where it was the selling club that stopped the deal as opposed to us or the player. All very well blaming the club for some signings (eg Carrillo) but not where they pulled away from a potentially destructive signing.

The destructive bit with Walcott is the wage structure at the club, which is the clubs fault

Hughes said that anyone thinking of leaving has to sort it by the end of our window, because Saints wouldn't let anyone go to a European club before their window shuts. That implies it is possible for a player to leave and go abroad, but Saints wouldn't let them (presumably because we couldn't replace them).

I'm sure that wouldn't apply to someone we wanted to lose aka Forster.

It was easy to see at the time they signed their contracts. And yet everyone here was ecstatic when we signed those two because we were supposedly showing the big clubs they couldn't steal our players. Nevermind that those clubs had no desire for either player and they were already on long term deals. We were bidding against ourselves extending the contracts of players into years where they would be well beyond their peak. So many people on those threads were like "Oh no, Davis can totally play until he's 34 no problem."

I do remember you, and I think Schad, pointing out that these long term, big money contracts were actually a catastrophic mistake. Correctamundo!

The concept was good...after all we were being criticised right, left and centre for selling players, but turned out to be a case of shutting the stable door etc. Fans may not like it, but buying cheap, adding value and selling high is best for a team of our size.

I remember being mixed on the contracts. I was fine with them getting pay rises to reflect their importance to the team at the time, but I didn't like adding time on to the contracts and it never even crossed my mind that we were doing it to stop them moving on to bigger teams.

The Forster one was the biggest **** up of all and I remember quite a few people being vocal about that one.

Not everyone was ecstatic. In fact I remember quite a few debates on it at the time.

I was one who was pleased at the time having had player after player leave. Doesn’t seem so good now with hindsight, however there were a few of you who said that at the time. You certainly weren’t alone.

    No problem admitting it.

Is it though, or did it ultimately lead to last season? I always maintained you could never do that every season to that extent.

Truth is probably in between, rather than black and white.

Still absolutely baffles me to this day... there was absolutely no reason whatsoever to give him that contract.

Sackable offence for Les on its own really.

    Yeah mate, quite.

Maybe Les thought we'd already been relegated?
