A goalkeeper/ Are you sure? Come to think of it, we did have that Norwegian on a trial a week or so ago...
All three are far better than what we have imo Winks is too injury prone Wanyama is a good defensive footballer but can’t play football. Dembele is getting on and yes he’s a good player but he has weaknesses. Dier like Wanyama is solid defensively but doesn’t offer anything going forward. I tell you what won’t win us the league and that is not signing anyone and selling Toby to a rival.
So how many times have you watched those three players? I've watched our midfield options over about 300 matches in total. I'd need at least as many to be confident others are better.
That’s why clubs have scouts, managers don’t have the time to watch players over and over and have to rely on their staff. I saw quite a bit of Napoli last season and the way they played impressed me and Jorginho was a big part of that.
winks was injured last season snd never fully recovered so I thik calling him injury prone is a bit previous imo. Likewise Wanyama was injured last season but previous showed he was indeed a good footballer. Dier has a great range of passing...look at his pass for Dele's first at the Bridge last season. His problem is a lack of concentration at times imo.
Which is why I trust our club on who to sign rather than your impressions of a player over a few matches. As I have pointed out before, most signings will be failures as to make a signing you have to pay the selling club more than they think the player is worth as well as paying the player a higher salary than they pay him. You also have a knowledge gap as they see him every day and you see him twice a week at most. If he is any good there are three other clubs trying to buy him.
Of course I’m not saying I know more than anyone at the club. I’m just saying there was players available that could have been signed or at least bid for.
I do like Winks as a player but can he be relied upon as a starter week in week out? Wanyama is good at what he does but we need a midfielder that can pass and be a playmaker imo.
I am quite confident we bid what we think players are worth, which means we miss out on most which is exactly the right answer.
Far better? Come on, KH, I get you’re frustrated with a lack of signings but I think you’re massively underrating some of our players. Dier in particular is very, very good and probably our most consistent and reliable midfielder, his only problem last season was that he didn’t have a rest thanks to Wanyama, Winks and Dembele all being injured at various stages, which resulted in him being overused and overworked by having to try and hold the midfield together by himself. It’s only been the past season where Dembele has declined, too, prior to that there’s not many CMs we’d have had over him, he’s phenomenal when fully fit and injury free. It’s a shame to see how he’s declined but if he doesn’t leave he’ll still be a huge asset, just hopefully one we won’t need to rely on all the time if we can bring a new CM in. Edit: As for Wanyama, injuries have been a problem but he’s a brilliant DM when on song. His first season for us in that partnership with Dembele was excellent.
Tbf Dier and Wanyama do what they’re asked. My gripe is we have badly needed a more creative, box to box midfielder for a while now and yet the club have decided not to sign one for whatever reason
Quick quiz question: When was the last season Spurs didn't sign anyone? promotions from within don't count.
