Spurs are easily the most successful club in the PL as regards building a squad and self financing. Their record is the best in terms money spent and league position. Transfers are becoming a game for the media and fans. The very best teams in the history are ALWAYS settled teams with few changes. Many Spurs fans it seem are less progressive, Chelsea & City fans don't know any different.
yes but net spend is net spend. They are choosing (or in this case some of their players are revolting) to sell a player and invest in the rest of the team. This is the first time in a while that the Liverpool bosses has spent big money and they have chosen to spend big as they feel the team are on the cusp of something big.
No club sells their key players for umpteen millions, and then chooses not to then invest in the rest of the team using that money. Or perhaps I have missed some glaring examples in the PL.
But Walker and Alderweirald were/are no longer key players. Their replacements were already in place. Trippier for Walker and Sanchez for Alderweirald
I am miffed because I think we are only 1-2 players away from winning the big one and we have been for a few years now, I don’t think it would take much at all to get us over the line and win a cup or even the league. I know new signings don’t guarantee success but imo not signing anyone guarantees at best standing still. I know money wise we are 6th and have overachieved. But do we want to become the new Arsenal and just be happy with finishing top 4 but not actually winning anything? The window hasn’t closed but I really do fear we might see our best centre back sold to a rival and not even replaced, let alone us signing a centre midfielder which everyone knows we need badly. IMO we need 2 but 100% that won’t happen in 4 days.
Toby is easily the best centre back we have. Walker was a blow because it improved City rather than weakened us. Trippier stepped up and Aurier and KWP were there too. Selling Toby means Foyth and CCV come into the defence if Dave or Jan get crocked.
Disagree. I think Vertonghen is. The potential problem with Alderweirald was apparent before the start of last season with his unwillingness to sign an improved contract and it continued through the season. His replacement was bought. If he changed his mind at some time before his injury there probably would not have been a problem and we would now have the best back three in the league.
While this might well be true, those players have to be pretty special. I've not seen anyone else buying anyone that good so far so perhaps they genuinely are not available.
If you think that the only way to move forward is to sign someone is that because you have seen good signings make a difference? Yes if we could find a VDV or a younger Davids it would make a difference and perhaps that's why we haven't signed anyone yet. It's very hard to find these players and if we do, we need to find them early, before the likes Madrid & United inflate the price beyond reason. We have done better than anybody at this game and interestingly it's usually not by signing someone early in the window. The reason Spurs are where they are right now is due to the financial and negotiating skills of Daniel Levy, his weakness has always been having to rely on others for spotting the right talent. He has always looked for the right help in this area and has had failures but perhaps his two most successful have been Harry Redknap and Pochettino. He has to rely on the judgement of these people and look at the squad and tell me that hasn't worked. Right now Spurs are in a great place and that is largely down to Levy in my book. I'm happy to trust his judgement especially as I don't have any other choice and I like to enjoy the football rather than fret about the future. The only signings we need right now IMO are top players who can make a difference like a top holding midfielder for example and there is still time King......................................relax
Jorginho would have been ideal for Spurs You’re telling me that Fabinho or Keita wouldn’t be good for Spurs either?
That’s generally how teams move forward. Like someone else said, we haven’t built this team by not buying players. Other than Winks and Kane we signed everyone else. I’m not expecting us to compete financially with City or Utd but we should be signing at least 2-3.
I’d agree. The problem, if we’re serious about competing at the top, is that the squad lacks depth. The depth we do have is not of the quality to match our rivals. Atm, a couple of key injuries and we’re in trouble.
Jorginho is being torn to shreds on social media having just been completely outplayed by an 18 year old Phil Foden. I’m sure he’ll prove a good player in time but first impressions weren’t great.
But we can still expect this team to move forward even without signings. Dele, Kane, Sanchez, have not reached their peak as others like Moura. Bringing in new players can be disruptive as well as beneficial, look at United still performing less than the sum of their parts, Chelsea are once again looking at new mangement and Klopp has a big job with his new signings. Spurs meanwhile will be playing in their awe inspiring stadium, looking and feeling good. We have come a long way from what Jol started and we still have a way to go. I have been around since the exciting sixties and this is the best Spurs have been since then.
Fair point and maybe the fact they’re so familiar with each other will help again. I really hope I’m wrong but if this transfer window ends and we haven’t made a single signing then I fear its going to be a long tough season.
Only skim read the arguments. If Utd won’t sell to us then we mustn’t sell to them. Getting good money is one thing but strengthening a rival while weakening ourselves (on the field) is ****ing dumb. Hence why Utd are so reluctant to let us have Martial. I’d rather sell him abroad or let him see out his contract and leave for free as a 31 yr old than just plain sell him to Utd
Spurm I know how you feel I hate to see us strengthen United. Let's see what happens the fact that nothing has suggests Levy is giving them a hard time as usual. Or they can't get him on the phone because he is too busy with our new home.
Let’s have everyone’s predictions then. Here’s my guesses: In: Grealish. Top CM (Brozovic/ Kovacic or maybe someone out of the blue). Toby replacement, one of De Ligt/ Mina/ Tarkowski/ Stones would be good. Out: Toby. Janssen. GK. Maybes in: Martial. Maybes out: Sissoko. Llorente.
Harry Redknapp has said Jack Grealish should think twice about joining us. So that's where his idiot son Jamie got it from...
