I’m not particularly surprised! They just got my hope up by seeming to be proactive earlier on in the window. I thought maybe they’d had the wake up call from surviving by the skin of our teeth and were going to address all our problem areas. Alas, premier league money banked once again and we go into another season incredibly light in quality and numbers in the attacking third.

This is the season that I want to see JWP become a regular starter, we have to crowbar him into the line up somehow. Set piece situations are so crucial in the modern game and he has one of the best deliveries in the PL. I watched with exasperation at our desperately poor delivery before he came on today.
I happen to think that we generally play better when both him and Pierre play together in the middle too.

Targett and JWP have been played more at RB than Reed in pre season. Valery hasn’t even made the squads.

JWP is nowhere near good enough to crowbar into the lineup in some kind of free role. He probably isn’t even good enough to play his natural position, unless we just wasted a bunch of money on Armstrong.

Agreed. I'm totally fine with Valery or whoever as primary backup; we need attackers.

This is a worthwhile point, and I think it's a bit telling that we've gone from two managers who were in a position of strength and left when they did not get what they wanted (for Poch, the board-level changes, though he might have left in any instance, and for Koeman, transfers and perhaps his own wage packet), to three managers who really don't have that much pull. Hughes has never been shy in the past, but as you say, he wasn't really in a position to stick his neck out this summer.

Isn’t that typical of the shift from managers to head coach? Who is to say it’s good for wet spam to splurge 100m on new untried players and a new manager. It may be, it may not be but it’s an expensive gamble.

I think you may be making a bit of a false case with both of those examples @Schad. Both left for bright lights and bigger bank balances, both had bloody good squads to work with and both got backed to one degree or another. We can’t criticise the club for not doing what west ham are doing now. We’ve spent more than enough on players, they just ain’t delivered yet.

Hughes is the manager we’ve got, this is the squad we’ve got. Let’s give them both a crack before we start writing them off. If we get reinforcements, even better.

Just seen Hughes' comment that he does not expect any more incomings or outgoings next week (except Forster). REALLY. I honestly thought that with the early transfer dealings, the club had learnt their lessons, but obviously not? 99% of fans can see that we need at least 1 attacking player. We look a shambles at the back conceding 13 goals in 6 pre season friendlies. Yesterday showed that the score could have been 5 or 6 to BMG, and they were cutting through midfield and our defence at will. The club new that Cedric was at the World Cup this year, but let Pied go, and have signed no cover. I know Beefy has said about Valery and Reed, but Hughes has played a left footed full back at RB in the last 2 pre season games?

Watching yesterday my 11 year old son said to me, "I wonder what the likes of Liverpool, Man City, even C Palace etc, will do to our defence? On the last couple of performaces, scary.

But, it is pre season and the real **** starts on Sunday, so COYR.

Did you remind your 11 year old that our **** defence last season only lost by one goal to Man City, twice? Once in the 97th minute and once in the 93rd minute? :emoticon-0110-tongu

*tongue in cheek, although the above is factually correct

Very true. Also told him that no player will want to get injured in the last pre season game before the real thing kicks off next weekend. He seemed to accept that as an explanation :emoticon-0102-bigsm

The shift from manager to head coach happened when Atkins was still coach, though.

Poch was backed, by Cortese. Koeman had a reshaping of the squad in his first season amidst the sales, and later made a point of mentioning in the media -- repeatedly -- that our business model was going to take us backward. It proceeded to take us backward.

And no, we have not spent enough on players. Beyond the fact that we've had sales that parallel our purchases, something basically unique in the league, a squad with multiple glaring weaknesses needs upgrades, and those upgrades are not going to materialize out of thin air. We have money; we have needs, and those needs should be addressed. We can keep hoping that maybe this is the year they all suddenly turn into world-beaters, and we can be disappointed yet again.

Looks like Fulham have given up on signing Matt Target....

Fulham have enquired about signing Real Madrid's French left-back Theo Hernandez, 20, on loan.

We’ve needed a new striker and a new winger for at least the past two seasons. Elyounoussi doesn’t really count as Tadic has gone, and Carrillo was poor and is now on loan, so we’re back at square one with less than a week to go.
