The cat clearly sees you as an easier touch than your missus! ;)

He's merely re-establishing the pecking order when you walk in the room.

Just had a reference request for a former employee who was a ****ing div. What's people's views on bad references? Personally I just decline to return them but I'm tempted this time to tell them the employee was a car crash of a person.

I usually just decline if they don't deserve a good reference. I'll probably just do that.

Had to do loads of these. Personally I always tried to find some positives, but I was also honest about areas that they could improve on. Don't believe in giving out **** references as it just screws up people's chances of another job, but I don't want to lie and give the new employer a false impression.

    In summary, just ignore it.

Isn’t it illegal to give a bad reference these days?

Yep, that's how they usually do it. A pro forma for info they want. You can only be honest about it mate. If they were utter ****, then you have to let them know. But as I say, I always tried to find some positives if there were any.

As for the negatives, I'd usually start with something like 'I would encourage 'insert name' to look at some training around 'insert issue' in order to raise their competency'

You have to be really careful what you put in them tbh. I’ve taken the bin option for plenty of tossers who’ve resurfaced elsewhere. However, if they were a proper **** there’s nothing that says more than a reference request form sent back with only their start date, leaving date and job title on the form, leaving every other question blank.....there’s more than one way to skin a cat....

Yeah I just replied saying I'm not providing the reference. I can't be arsed with the pettiness of a crappy reference.
