Didn't City bury some of their outstanding FFP debt into a new training facility ?

I thought that they just messed around with their sponsorship deals? Could be wrong.

I can't remember the exact details of it all now. Possibly your're right about the sponsorship stuff, I seem to recall that they built a new training facility and lumped it in with the Etihad stadium deal, in order to clean up some FFP debts.

I'll have a look again and see what it was. <ok>

could there be ulterior motives behind the massive investment in the project? Manchester City was in the news for selling the naming rights of The City of Manchester Stadium to Etihad Airways for 400 million over a period of 10 years. Several people from the footballing fraternity raised objections regarding the total amount of the sponsorship deal as well as the links of Etihad Airlines to the Abu Dhabi Royal family. The deal was worth over twice the previous record amount of 187 million held for the world famous Madison Square Garden. A similar deal sponsorship deal with Emirates Airlines for Arsenal saw revenue generated of a comparatively paltry amount of 90 million over 15 years. Etihad Airlines has also yet to post a profit in its history and questions were thus raised regarding the veracity of the deal. Many viewed it as an attempt by the owners at Manchester City to bypass the laws regarding Financial Fair Play and strongly called for blocking the deal.

It was later revealed that the naming rights were not for the stadium alone but for the entire 210 acre Manchester City campus being developed around the ground of which the 80 acre football academy is a part. Under the UEFA Financial Fair Play rules, any investments relating to the development of stadiums and expenditures on youth team programmes would not be taken into account.

In other words, the 100 million expenditure on the Academy would not be recorded while the revenue generated from the sponsorship deals and ticket sales arising from the same would be. The added millions would be critical towards ensuring Financial Fair Play for Manchester City.

If I'm reading that right, then it's the money from sponsorship that counted against FFP positively and the training ground expenditure wasn't considered.
Villa's owners could get a business to sponsor their own training ground, I guess. Don't know anything about them, so I don't know if that's likely.

A bit of both I think. FFP rules stated that any investment into stadium development and youth team programme wouldn't be taken into account. City built a new academy and neatly tied it in with the sponsorship deal with Etihad, who managed to find £400m to sponsor City, despite never having returned a profit in their history.

They've got a few dodgy sponsorships like that. It makes FFP pointless.

  8. Yes, because you needed to do that.

    Spurs don't.

    That's my point.

I still reckon Wolves will finish above you.

You said we needed to spend £200m. We've just done all of that business for £70m and we'll probably end up recouping some of that on some sales.
So your point was a stupid one.

As for Wolves finishing above Arsenal ... Bookmarked :)

If Daniel doesn't open his purse soon I fear this year will be your last in the CL for a long time.

HIAG assures us that Bale to Spurs is gathering pace, despite Poch laughing off reports that Spurs would sign him and the new Real boss reiterating how important he is to Madrid.

Got to love a HIAG prediction <rofl>

They scraped 3rd last year and Liverpool have strengthened considerably, Chelsea were ****ed by Conte for the first 3 months of last season and you have the players to perform much better with a new manager and system (plus the new signings).
I can see Spurs struggling this season and their only hope of "pushing" 4th will be if Jose ****s us up and puts us down to 6th.

You could say we have got a settled team and some others haven't.

  20. I think most people would agree that Spurs is Bale's spiritual home.

With Ronaldo gone, Bale is set to become the Daddy at Real. Spurs is the only club that could tempt him away.

I'm not saying he will return this season, Pix; but I think we both know it's on the cards at some point in the future.
