Fair. I wasn't matching like for like with Defenders. I can see Hoedt slipping out of contention this year if Vestergaard is any good. Yosh, Vestegaard and Bednarek could be a very good back 3. Pelle was good because Tadic was outstanding. I remember @FLT giving him heaps game after game for not doing the basics and he was generally right. Nobody got on his little flicks forwards but he got on the end of much of what Dusan did. They had chemistry those two.

 

I’m 57 years old mate. I know what the lower leagues are like, and I’m under no illusions; but I wouldn’t stop supporting Saints whatever division we were in.

 

Yes if we were to go down it could all go wrong and we could wallow at the bottom of whichever league we find ourselves in. But there is far more chance that we could be competitive in the Championship/League One and challenge for winning the league than there is of us doing it in the Prem. You may not think it is a good chance and think it is far more likely that we go into financial ruin for a few years at least but the chances of us competing at the top ends of the league are more likely in the lower leagues than the PL, where the chance is 0%

 

So... you want us to get relegated to a league where we will be competitive enough to get promotion to a league where we won’t be. In other words you want us to be West Brom.

 

Guys the new season is about to start..........None of us have the magical Chrystal ball. Everything is going to be guess work for a while. How many of us thought we were down and out a month before the last season was to end? quite a few...........That is what it is like to be a Saints fan up and down, down and up.......
Sparky has adequate cover in all departments maybe not the best in our eyes, just give them a chance........Who knows.............. CoyS...........

 

Basically yes. At least we have some glory every couple of years if we can be as bouncebackable as West Brom are. There is nothing more boring than being a mid table team in the PL in my view. Much rather be involved in relegation battles every year than finish 9th - 15th.

 

Nice in theory, but the Championship is way more competitive than the PL these days, so there’s more chance we would be a Sunderland than a West Brom or even a Leeds.

 

Oh yeah I agree, but there is still more chance of being competitive in the Champ than the PL for us (in terms of winning it)

 

I think most Saints fans have no expectations of ever winning the PL, but would be happy with an occasional European foray. I certainly would.

 

Sadly that is true Chilcs..........Mind you we get one hell of a kick when we actually beat some of the contenders for the title. Top 6 or 7 is well within our means as is the odd cup. Ive been happy with that for all my time as a Saints fan.................

By the way where is everyone meeting up these days? Im actually home for the first couple of home games. so Would like the chance to meet up especially for the game against Monchengladbach........

Like you, have spent my entire life following the fortunes (& lack of them!); that's not in dispute if you are a "seasoned fan" of the last 4, 5, 6 decades! But surely, having ASPIRATIONS for better results is what drives footie fans from game to game, season to season. Just lowering your aspirations so that you might (?) expect something better than you have/had seems, as another poster put it, rather delusional.

That said, supporting a club, thru thick 'n' thin...... an' even thinner! is certainly the measure of a true fan!

 

No it is not luck. And if you want us to rely on luck to score goals then we 're ****ed.

 

I would say that every football fan, on a match by match basis, expects, hopes, aspires or whatever that their team will win the next match. What happened to Saints fans in the last season or so was that while we didn’t stop hoping, the level of expectation was lowered, mainly because of the rubbish that was being served up on the pitch and the apparent lack of activity in the boardroom.

I believe that most of us are wishing for a clean slate and a fresh start this season. I certainly am, and my expectations, while realistic, are definitely optimistic!

 

I'm hopeful because I think the club and players may have realised that it is a good thing to win matches after last season.

I don’t want us to get relegated. I want us to win whatever league we are in, including this one. Which of these outcomes do you consider the more likely?

 

You do need some luck, to succeed in any endeavour; and I don’t think we got much over the last two seasons. So we’re due a bit imo.
