Have to disagree. For one thing, Vardy never played in League 1; Leicester was in the Championship when they signed him out of the Conference, and in his second season there (at 26, a fair bit younger than Lambert) he emerged as a very capable goalscorer. Had Leicester fallen short of promotion, I suspect Vardy's finishing and physical attributes would have earned him PL suitors.

Fair enough, I thought he'd been recruited by Leicester in League 1. I stand by the rest of my post though - I think it's unlikely Vardy would have made it to the PL at 26 had he not gone up with Leicester.

I have a vivid memory of walking into a pub in Farnborough when the telly was showing Man Utd vs Leicester. A long ball over the top to some bloke called Vardy whose legs were a blur - suddenly it's in the net, the whole pub was cheering (Farnborough is a long way from Leicester btw), but the general consensus on the goalscorer seemed to be "bloody hell, he's quick, who the **** is he?" Pretty sure not one person in England at that moment thought they had just seen a future PL winner.

The "bloody hell, he's quick" thing is what would have gotten him to the Premier League, I suspect. He might not have been terribly well-known (beyond the press he got for being the first seven-figure transfer from non-league), but he would have been on the radar screens of lower-half PL sides at the very least. Rickie was older, and didn't have the physical attributes teams generally covet; Vardy did.

Now, I agree totally that there are a lot of other players who have risen to be solid PL players who probably wouldn't have gotten a second glance had their teams not gotten promoted (beyond Lambert, I'd include the likes of his old Stockport teammate Ashley Williams, fellow Ashley Mr. Barnes of Burnley, basically half of the Bournemouth squad), but the Vardys (Vardies?) of the world do generally get plucked from the Championship, to greater or lesser effect.

Having seen his contrbution against ManU today I am quietly gutted that we didnt get him this summer. Would be very confident if we had.

Not very good equates to 13 goals and 20 assists in 113 games apparently. Thats 33 goals I would be VERY pleased to have in the squad right at this moment.

I'm gonna reiterate: he's terrible. For one thing, that's the French league, which has a tendency to make mediocre attackers look good. Second, his record over the past two years (on both a per game and per minute basis) is really quite bad, which is tough to do when in the lineup for a team that waltzes over much of its opposition. For a third, again, the fans of the team he plays for think that he's an utter waste of space, to the extent that their primary hope this summer was that the team would buy out his contract:

    http://www.asmfoot.fr/forum/index.php?/topic/4906-rachid-ghezzal-merci-jardim/&page=23

I realize that there's a vast difference of opinion on the validity of the feelings of other fans, but I'd note again that it is France, and looking fairly good for the home fans isn't the hardest task, especially if you play for one of the few good teams. Monaco fans were sad to see Carrillo go, because he made the end of already-decided games fun, but they also thought it was hilarious that they made a profit on him given that he wasn't much good. Monaco fans liked Carrillo a lot more than they like Ghezzal. who they appear to consider a talentless fraud who isn't fit to wear their shirt.

If the Ghezzal rumour is true, and considering our recent Carrillo purchase, does that mean Monaco is becoming our guilty obsession for player scouting :emoticon-0100-smile

The 13 goals and 20 assists is over a lot of years so not that great, but I trust that the board know more than me. Was a price quoted?

It’s the same as us promoting players from the academy and getting universal praise for it. It wouldn’t have happened if we had been Premier League. In fact has anyone really broken through since we got promoted?

Point taken, but I think most of us have learned not to take Godders too seriously.

If you ever want to be both appalled and amused btw, check out the politics thread on the Premiership board. Or maybe not ,it's a bit of a horrorshow

Whilst I have no interest in what he did in a friendly match against Man Utd reserves, I certainly would have liked us to have signed him. However, regardless of whether we were in for him or not, he's gone to Liverpool. I can't get gutted about a player choosing to go to one of the big six.

If he was lining up in a Watford or Bmouth shirt this coming season, I'd be kicking everything. But Liverpool, I'm relaxed.

An opinion I’ve read a lot recently and one I tend to agree with is that opposition to Brexit & Trump voters etc tends to be general attacks on intellect and name calling. This is as opposed to actually listening and debating with people who might just happen to have a different viewpoint
You’re not going to change someone’s mind by calling them stupid or bigoted no matter which side of an argument you’re on.
This includes football/saints discussions, which I’m pleased are generally decent and civil on this forum and well mediated

Unfortunately I don’t think we’re going to get any cash for Forster and another loan move will be our only route.

Danny Drinkwater apparently on his way out of Chelsea. Linked to us but then everyone with 2 legs and a pair of football boots is linked with us at the moment. My point in posting is that people talk about our transfer failures without accepting that it happens to every team...the only difference being that Chelsea can tolerate failures more than we can. Sometimes things just don't work out. It's too easy to look at other teams transfers and think...we should have done that....we missed out....but then not look further down the line and realise that not all transfers work.

Did anyone think Danny would be a starter for Chelsea? I don't think they did.
Such a strange move, leaving once in a lifetime champions to chase the buck.
If things don't pan out for him now, he won't get a tear from me.
Could have been a hero. Now, nobody loves him.

Never rated him anyway. The freak season Leicester won the league every single one of them played out their skin week in week out and looked like world beaters. In football reality most of them are bang average on any given day bar Kante and Mahrez(when he can be bothered).
