Richard Wright to Man City. Don't know why you wouldn't promote a youth player. Like Wright, Green wouldn't do much of a job in an emergency. If 2 Keepers got injured, would they play Green in a Champions League Knockout? Really don't think so. They would get an emergency loan. Bit of a strange one, but it happens.
There's a growing trend at big clubs for signing experienced GKs who qualify as home-grown. Richard Wright at City as mentioned, but Utd signed Lee Grant this summer as well. They tend to be players with coaching ambitions who can still do a job if there's a real goalkeeping crisis. It means the youngsters who actually need playing time to progress can go out on loan. No point keeping your hotshot goalkeeper playing U23's football when you could loan him to the championship, as in Gunn's case.
Very good point. I think they could have named the next youth prospect after Gunn. Who would qualify for home grown, and wouldn't expect first team football. Still be a good as Green would be. I use to wonder if it was to be as a mentor/coach on the training pitch and in the dressing room? Don't know if that's a thing. Wright and Green have both had a long career at a lot of levels, been involved in the England squad. I see it more as a coach/Mentor role for the younger Keepers. It's hard to give young keepers matches and experience. As 1 error can lose you the game. Maybe the big clubs see this as an extra coaching option.
Sorry but it’s blatantly used to get around the homegrown quota if required. If they wanted to employ a coach to mentor the young GK’s they’d employ Green as a coach, he was retiring anyway. But the fact they register him as a player is to be able to list him on the bench when they need an additional homegrown player. Also if as you say he’s there to mentor the next hot shot, hows he meant to do that if they are sent on loan with his arrival?

The mentor role is for those even earlier in their development, not yet ready for loans. Chelsea currently have 8 "development" goalkeepers training with them, and 3 more senior goalkeepers out on loan. In Chelsea's case Jamal Blackman counts as homegrown, but it's better for Chelsea if he develops out on loan. It's a convenient arrangement that works for Green, Chelsea and their academy.
Derby are set to sell Czech striker Matej Vydra, 26, to Leeds in an £11m deal, and will use the money to purchase Ipswich's 28-year-old English striker Martyn Waghorn. (Sun)
Derby still must sell to balance the books, I can't see them spending all of the £11m on Waghorn. You'd think £5-6 tops. But he's one of those prickly and tough players that with several kids in the team on loan seems a sound enough move. I'm glad he's no longer at the Binners as I thought he was the toughest opponent from them that we've had for a while. Bah!
