Conspiracy theories in Scottish football are as popular as pies. Only they’re a lot cheaper.

As soon as the final whistle blew in Glasgow’s East End, the accusation was thrown at Celtic they had lay down to Aberdeen . After all, during this season and last Derek McInnes’ side had failed to secure as much as a draw against Brendan Rodgers ’ all-conquering squad. Nine games, nine defeats.

Rangers were hoping Sunday’s storyline would follow those that had gone before it as the Ibrox side attempted to secure the runners-up spot. Then came Andrew Considine’s second-half winner at Celtic Park. Few expected it. But a conspiracy? Did Celtic really lay down to the club from the North East?

You wouldn’t have come to that conclusion had you watched the action. Aberdeen had to pull off a series of last-ditch tackles while Leigh Griffiths powered a header that looked goal-bound until Joe Lewis made an astonishing save that somehow kept the ball out of the net.

No, you could not claim Celtic weren’t trying.

But it was the first time Rodgers’ side had lost at home domestically in two seasons,

True, but it had been a long time coming. Let’s examine the numbers.

Celtic have won only 11 of the 19 Premiership games at home this season. They have also failed to score in four of the last nine league matches at Celtic Park.

Despite Aberdeen being three points worse off this season than last, they finished just nine behind the champions in 2017-2018. In the last campaign they trailed by a mammoth 30 points.

So Celtic lay down to Aberdeen? The results would suggest not.
