There are no guarantees though are there? Getting to the very top is hard. There are only so many places up for grabs at the top clubs and a lot of players will only get one shot at that big move. Maybe the player makes the "right choice" by not following the money, then suffers a bad injury and watches from the stands as their new club gets relegated... and now the really big club that was interested isn't interested any more because they've signed someone else.

I once left a firm I was happy with, because one of the contract managers, a friend, struck out on his own and sold me a vision of how rich we'd both be when his new project really got going.

It never did, really - 2 years later he wound it up and I was looking for another job. The industry equivalent of getting relegated after jumping ship.

Kinda similar. I quit a job fairly recently - after just under four months - and moved on again and money really wasn't a consideration at any stage.

Although I am technically earning more monthly now, my outgoings as a % of my incomings are much higher. But I moved for satisfaction and the all-round package of where I was with, who I would be with and how I would feel.

    It wasn't about the money.

I am saying that £4m/year = £80k per week give or take - not how much you would make from it [emoji4]

    80k x 52 weeks = £4,160,000 a year

EDIT re-read my post and I see what you are saying. What I mean is they get 80k per week for 2-3 years = ~£12 million over 3 years.

Let's be honest, that should be enough to set you up for life? That is why i do not get the "They only have a limited time to make money" argument. How many of us will earn that in our lifetime, let alone in 3 years....

Yep. No disrespect intended but your choice doesn't translate across to pro footballers. Its admirable that you don't value money above all else, I would make the same decision but do pro footballers ever do this unless they're on the decline?

Any news on a 6'3" centre forward turning up at SMS to hold up his new shirt yet?

According to Sparky in his Echo article we have spent all our spare change (VVD money) and now we need to sell before buying anyone else
Not helped I expect by only being able to loan out Corrillio and Boufal so expect to sell Gallagher (£7m) and Target (£10m) who are in demand then try and shift Fraser for as much as possible. There must be quite a few other peripheral players who can be sold quickly to build a fighting fund to get a decent centre forward

I’m still really struggling to deal with the ineptitude of wasting a large chunk of VVD money on Carrillo. Absolutely shocking business.

It didn’t work out. They tried but it just didn’t go as planned. Not all transfers do.

Think it was mentioned a few pages back, but after Vestergaard arrived the players who had to be included in the official 25 man squad was around 28/29.
Only Boufal has left since, So still need to shift a further 3/4 players to make room for a new arrival

We need a clearout, period. That said, I don't think that's the primary reason we aren't going to spend further.

I believe you mentioned Jahanbakhsh as someone we should be looking at earlier in the summer? Apparently he is off to Brighton for £25m

This is something I don't understand. Yes we had roughly £50m left over from the VVD sale, but what about all the other money from the PL TV deal? I simply don't understand how basically every other club can spend and we claim poverty, when we have made far more money than virtually all of them in player sales and aren't too far behind in other revenue (not including the top 6 in this).

We definitely need a clearout just due to the size of the squad, but if we can shift 6/7 more players, if only on loan or some of the younger guys going somewhere where they are guaranteed playing time, we should definitely have enough to buy a couple of players if we want to.

Whilst I'm happy with the transfer dealings so far this summer, if its true that there is no money left in the bank, was it wise to spend £13.5 million on a GK if no deal to sell Forster was in place. Yes, we needed a new CB and a replacement for Tadic which have been sorted, but we are incredibly short up front as we have been for the past 2 seasons. I'm all for giving Simms a chance to replace Boufal in the squad, but we really need another option up front.

Hopefully we can sell and not loan Forster. Looks like Gallagher could be sold. Wouldn't be surprised to see Harry Reed sold on, and possibly Targett if Bertrand is going to stay. Also wouldn't be surprised to see Gabbi leave as well. That could all raise around £35 - £40 million to buy a couple of new forward players.

I still think we will have 1-2 new players in before the Burnley game, but fully expect 3 or 4 to go before this happens. Lots of deals will happen in the last week before window closes, as players will have a good ideally then if their are in their managers plans or not.

It may not be as easy as some think to shift players that we consider not good enough, especially as players have a choice of where they go.

And why do people think we have no money in the bank....a good business always keeps money back for an emergency.

I don't think money is the issue, we currently have a senior squad of around 28-30. We can only name 25, so bringing more in is going to cause even more of a headache.

    http://www.skysports.com/football/n...have-to-sell-before-they-can-buy-more-players

Hughes saying that although pleased with the early business, we now have to sell to buy. And as I said above....I don't take that to mean there is no reserve money....just that it isn't going to be spent this window. An interesting bit at the end....pointing out that the European window is open for some weeks after our window shuts, but Hughes warning players and their agents that no one leaves once our window is shut. That suggests to me that there are players possibly seeking a move and he is warning them to get a move on or they have to stay.
