I don't see what the size of the club has to do with it.

Even if we were competing for him, his choice would be between a side who finished 7th, qualified for Europe and have progressed year-on-year recently, and a side who avoided relegation on the final day and have regressed year-on-year recently.

He doesn't have any personal affiliation towards us, and nor is he required to abide by whatever length of contract he signs (ie if Burnley go backwards this season, he could just leave for someone else next summer. It's not like he's hand-cuffing himself to Burnley). So as of today, choosing us over Burnley would seem very strange to me.

Sadly, we are not as attractive as we were two years ago. And equally, Burnley are more attractive than they were two years ago.

Whilst this is true let’s not pretend that a player with no affiliation to a team or an area of the country would be looking much further than who pays the most money. Something we do more than Burnley

What's that got to do with anything, it's all about the money (not going to start singing) surely we could pay higher wages than Burnley?

Agreed, money is the only thing players are really interested in, as indeed I was when I was working

I didn't bring up your point about wages. I brought up your point about club size. That is what I was questioning.

Leeds and Forest are arguably "bigger" clubs than Burnley. I wouldn't expect them to be ahead of Burnley either though. Even in a theoretical world where they could offer more money, down in the Championship.

But on your point about wages, I don't know what Burnley can offer. But given the money swashing around in the PL these days, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they could match us in a bidding war. It's not like we pay £120k.

(Not that any of this matters though. We've signed our CB.)

I changed my job 18 months ago for less money. Not everyone does it for the money. I agree a lot do, but not all.

If you were a professional footballer living in a dream world of cars, women and mansions I'd take your point. Juan Mata came out a couple of years ago and said it was obscene what footballers get paid and he would like to see it change. I think it was just prior to moving to Man United....

I still have a nagging suspicion that we struggle to attract players we want and I think it has a lot more to it than simply our wage structure.

Not sure what you're saying to be honest. You don’t take my point because I’m not a professional footballer?

Money is a consideration, but I also think footballers consider other factors when choosing a club....just as we do when choosing a job.

Also take into account that for mere mortals, money is the bigger consideration as it is a huge % of what we need to do to live.

Footballers etc, the money is so obscene that they have enough, so the money is important, but the difference between £4m a year and £5m a year isn't actually that much if you see what I mean. It may be 25% more, but is not as much as the difference between £40k a year and £50k a year or £20k a year and £25k a year to most of the rest of the country if you get what I mean.

    Not panicking at all!

I just made a self admitted unsubstantiated observation that actually stated that I am more concerned if we do well in friendlies. Since we were really really poor yesterday I know we'll be ok :)

Yes, but the other side of that coin is that footballers have a limited time in which they can earn those sums of money and set themselves (and their families) up for life. When you have that time pressure on you and the knowledge you're only ever one bad injury away from the end of your career there's perhaps more pressure to earn as much as they can while they can.

So make the right choices, and don't follow to money would be my advice. Work hard, and it will follow you.

I take what you are saying, but if you won the lottery at say aged 25 and won £4 million, would you think you are set for life, providing you were reasonably sensible? 4 million is £80k a week. If you get that for 2-3 years, you should be set for life. Sadly, as they say, youth is wasted on the young, as I know at 48 I wouldn't work again if I won that.

Oh yeah, £4m could easily set a normal person up for life. I wouldn't have to work again if I won £4m (although I might end up doing some sort of job because as you say it's not really enough to live a crazy carefree lifestyle).

Footballers aren't "normal" people though and have a different lifestyle they want to maintain. I suspect a lot of their wives/girlfriends and kids wouldn't be entirely happy about going from £80k per week, living in a mansion, driving a Ferrari etc to 'retiring' to a nice quiet house in the suburbs, driving a sensible car and living off whatever income they got as interest/dividends on the money they invest.

I don’t follow your calculations no7. Even if you got a 2% return on your £4m, that is only £80k per annum, not per week. Agreed, that’s more than most of us earn but it’s hardly footballer levels of wealth.
