Damn. What is the trophy called now?

Anyway, the French invented world cup football... so it went home in that respect.

If I remember rightly they played 7 games winning four and losing three and were beaten twice by Belgium and once by Croatia. We also struggled with an underperforming midfield and attack. I felt like I was watching Saints when watching England. Safe football with no risk taking.

How come the first World Cup was in Uruguay then?

Oh, and the original Jules Rimet trophy, presented to the winners of every World Cup from 1930 to 1970, when Brazil won it for the third time and kept it permanently, was stolen (again) in 1983 and is believed to have been melted down. The Brazilian FA commissioned a replica.

Because they were current Olympic champions and Frenchman Rimet thought it should begin there?

Yes, fair enough, but it’s a bit of a stretch to say the French invented the World Cup just because the first president of FIFA happened to be French.

The French claim the Olympics when even the founder of the modern Olympics acknowledges it was based on games over here....Wenlock? Will have to look that up.

Yep....Wenlock Olympics....which was why one of the Olympic 2012 mascots was called Wenlock.

What did we do in the old days before Google :)

Actually that is a silly post as we wouldn't have a forum to debate it either, so we wouldn't be asking the question.
