TRANSFER LATEST: Sunderland in talks with cult hero former Celtic & Sheffield Wednesday defender
Recently-released Sheffield Wednesday captain Glenn Loovens is in talks with Sunderland over a free transfer move to the club.

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald spoke on the Roker Rapport Podcast this week about the need to strengthen the core of our side with physical, experienced players.

He admitted that whilst we play some nice football, we aren’t very big and that could prove to be an problem if we head into the League One season without addressing the issue.

Donald also admitted that we’re interested in a number of free agents, and that we’ll have some trialists featuring in a red and white shirt during this weekend’s friendly with St Mirren.

Thus far none of the names of the free agent players have leaked out, and we may have to wait until tomorrow to find out who the trialists are that are being given a chance to impress up in Scotland, but it hasn’t deterred us from trying to dig around and find out who we’re talking to.

So we got chatting to a fella who supports Sheffield Wednesday, and he informed us that last night the wife of former Owls defender Glenn Loovens had followed Sunderland on all forms of social media - something she apparently also did ahead of the Dutchman’s arrival in South Yorkshire back in 2013.

We then had this checked out, and it does indeed appear that Loovens is in talks with Sunderland regarding a move to the club.

Having quickly perused the profile of Mrs Loovens it would appear that the couple are currently on a family holiday abroad somewhere, but it’s thought that he’ll return back to England over the weekend in order to hold talks with Sunderland’s recruitment team.

He’s something of a cult hero at both Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic and was captain of the Hillsbrough club for four seasons, but departed at the end of last season after deciding the time had come to move on to a new adventure.

The popular former Netherlands international scored the winner at St James’ Park against Newcastle during the 2016-17 season, but he fell out of favour once Jos Luhukay came in as manager and it became clear towards the end of the campaign that his time with Wednesday was up.

Whilst he’s not exactly a spring chicken, it’s certainly the type of signing that would make sense. Loovens is experienced, has leadership qualities and has never actually played at a level lower than the Championship - so I can’t imagine that too many Sunderland supporters would grumble if we did decide to pursue him.

    -----------------------------------

The bit about his wife is interesting and maybe quite insightful!

Good to know that Donald etc are aware that our side is too small and weak. It's something that's been overlooked for too long.

Hope so , but O’Shea had massive experience and can’t say our defence looked shored up whilst he was around

Pompey ready to end Eisa interest – and keep Chaplin
    Jordan Cross
    Published: 18:11 Friday 20th July 2018
POMPEY are ready to turn their attentions away from Mo Eisa.

That could mean a Fratton Park future for home-grown product Conor Chaplin.

    Pompey target Mo Eisa
The Blues are now preparing to draw a line under their pursuit of the £1.5m-rated Cheltenham striker.

The News understands that Pompey met the Robins' demands for the 24-year-old striker, but haven't been given the green light to complete a deal.

Meanwhile, Championship club Leeds are understood to have entered the race for Eisa, with Sunderland also maintaining their interest.

A second-tier side bringing their financial clout to the table is likely to drive up the price for the 25-goal marksman.

Kenny Jackett today outlined the dangers of spending too much energy chasing one player, although losing out on Eisa would be a source of frustration.

Ultimately, though, Pompey remain comfortable about the scenario.

Not bringing in an experienced striker would leave Chaplin remaining at Fratton Park next season.

The 21-year-old is set to move to Coventry with the fans' favourite desperate to get first-team minutes under his belt. Jackett has indicated that he's not prepared to let Chaplin leave, however, until he has a suitable replacement in the building.

That could pave the way for the striker to remain at the club that he made his senior breakthrough with.

Pompey are still on the lookout for an additional front man, but any new face would have to be of the right level of experience and quality before a Chaplin exit was considered.

Sunderland want to take Aston Villastriker Ross McCormack on loan and are lining up a bid for Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones.

McCormack has no future at Villa Park under Steve Bruce and, even though they have new investment, the Scotland international is one of the players they are keen to sell after a troubled two years at the club.

The 31-year-old enjoyed a productive spell on loan with Melbourne City earlier this year which saw him score 13 goals in 15 games, ironically after Sunderland failed to agree terms on a loan deal in January.

Sunderland want to take out of favour Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack on loan
However, the new owners are keen on adding McCormack's scoring touch and also want Northern Ireland international Jones.

The 23-year-old former Middlesbrough winger has been the subject of interest from Hull City and Derby County but Sunderland manager Jack Ross is understood to be keen to tempt him to the Stadium of Light.

    2 immediate thoughts.

1 - past issues strongly suggest the guy is an arsehole with a bit of an attitude problem.

2 - he would destroy this league. He's a top top Championship striker and if he came, even if he was stroppy he'd be banging them in.

Ross is putting together some experienced players, alongside a lot of Academy ex pats and on today's showing albeit against a piss poor Scottish club he,seems to be going in the right direction.
Yes we need strengthening up front but I'm not sure a player like McCormick with his obvious attitude issues is the right type to bring to the club.
I think we can perform in League 1 with pretty much what we have providing we sign a big CF ie Wyke. We don't need the problems this guy might well bring with him despite his obvious talents.

    It's a dilemma marra.....

Would I want someone with a bad attitude contaminating the young 'uns..... 100% NOT !
Would I take him if he guarantees 20 goals.... EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK !!

Up to the GROWN UPS to decide where to draw the line??

One thing is for certain.... we NEED a big BULLY up front and FAST!!

Ideally, I'd like Billy Sharp.... if not what's Dean Windass up to <whistle>
