Before my time but surely in ‘78 most people expected that Scotland squad to at least get through that group? Looks like a tidy squad. FWIW I’d like all the home nations and Ireland to make the finals. Now you have to be proper dross to not make the Euros, you should at least make it to those now and again.
In recent times Scotland have been less than a shadow of their former selves, but back in the day they did themselves proud in World Cup terms, probably feeling they could have done better in certain games. They had many awesome players and managers that made English domestic football what it was before the dawn of the Premier League. Apart from the Wembley damage and Joe Jordan's elbow v Wales at Anfield in 77.
World cup fact: After yet another defeat to Belgium it puts England in the esteemed company of Egypt and Panama of being teams to lose THREE games at this years World Cup. If this is success then thank **** I'm Scottish, at least we don't kid ourselves on and know we're ****e.

I remember 78 vividly, I watched the tourney in the mixed company (mostly Englishmen) who gave us as much chance of winning as my fellow Scots, ie zero. Incidentally they (the English lads) cheered loudly at our defeat and told us in no uncertain terms what the Netherlands would do to us. I took no umbrage because Scotland and England are rivals, that's what rivals do.
