For quite some time I have often asked where will the spending stop when it comes to transfer fees and salaries. Ronaldo is now reportedly earning over 82,000 Euros a day, and you will forgive me if I think that is absolutely ridiculous on every front, and although Juventus can afford that kind of money it still irks me greatly.

Every day when I read the football gossip columns I see stupid money being bandied around about certain players, most of whom I have never heard of, and apparently Wilfred Zaha is now being offered up for well over his value (remind me what he has done lately) and I also couldn't help but ask who would want Balotelli at the supposed asking price?

The old excuse of a footballer's career being short lived doesn't cut it for me anymore especially when you consider that most working people who want to see matches have to ante up their hard earned wages (probably less per year than Ronaldo earns in a day + endorsements) and get treated like something that crawled out of the sewer.

Who makes the decisions to pay this kind of money, is it the agent, the parents or the tea lady? I know it will never stop and I think the future of football as we experience it is becoming more impossible to sustain, and we see that on a regular basis down at Ashton Gate where have to cut our cloth to suit our bank balance or risk falling afoul of the financial regulators who can permanently damage our ability to compete.

Sad old world but it's all we have to sustain our love of the beautiful game.

Quite ridiculous but clubs are still willing to pay these crazy sums.

No human being is worth that amount of money. It’s obscene when people are going hungry and trying to live without the basics.
I’m not, and never have been what I would call a left-winger - but this type of thing really gnaws at my free-market psyche.
Yes of course if someone offered it to me then I would take it - I don’t blame Ronaldo - I blame the system which facilitates it. Where is FFP in all this?
On a plus note I have read that he does put quite a bit of his money into charities and other good causes. It’s still obscene though.

And there was me thinking I would get a roasting on this thread but thanks for the replies that share my thoughts about this excessive over spending. Is there any need for the revolving door routine where players stay for a year and then beg for more before heading in another direction to satisfy their, and their agents, sickening greed for more moolah?

Difficult to see where it’s going to end , although it must do at some point surely ? . The amount of money being earned , even by average players is obscene . It doesn’t seem possible that it can be sustained, I’ve thought that for ages now though and it still is.
The worry is once one club goes under it will snowball.

Would you say the same about a businessman?

You must be a Trump admirer but then again it could all be fake news. Up here in Canada we worship the ground he walks on and hang on his every word, and if you believe that then I have some wonderful arable land for sale up near Yellowknife. I agree football is a business but I think they are 2 different scenarios, especially when the supporters pay some of the bills.

Firstly, I am not a Trump admirer. I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion!

Secondly, you pay the bills for any company when you buy their product, so it is just as obscene for a banker to earn 10 million pounds as it is for a footballer. I was keen to see if you were applying double standards and sure enough you confirmed you were!

At the end of the day, footballers, just like bankers or any other profession, have a unique set of skills which people are willing to pay for. Its a basic case of supply and demand, so when footballers are parading their skills in front of worldwide TV audiences into the billions they will be paid accordingly <ok>

Just having a bit of fun man so calm down and if people want to pay their money to see grossly overpaid players then so be it. The burning flag is perhaps the key to my thoughts about that lovely man called Donald - have a great day, and I'm sorry about the score from Russia. Why do they bother with this senseless 3rd place final when it's rather like marrying the ugly sister???

I don’t trust Trump as far as I could throw him. He is a loose cannon on the world stage, but I do think that the scale of protest against him has been disproportionate considering that despite his controversial comments his regime isn’t as distasteful as some of the vile dictators we have entertained over years gone by - where were the protesters then?
