Striker Sam Greenwood admits it was a "very hard" decision to leave Sunderland after securing a move to Arsenal. The promising 16-year-old was in demand with Manchester United and Liverpool also keen on the teenage forward. The Gunners won the race to land his signature and Greenwood has opened up about the decision to leave Wearside. Writing on his Instagram account, Greenwood said: "Today is the start of a new chapter in my life signing for @Arsenal and I can’t wait to get started, I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead. "Leaving @sunderlandafcofficial after 10 years the club I love and support was a very hard decision, I have met some special people along the way. "Big thanks to @sunderlandafcofficial and all coaches past and present for everything they have done for me . I will never forget my roots. #murtonbornandbred #sunderland#redandwhitearmy #arsenal #gunners." Greenwood enjoyed a successful season for Sunderland's Under-18 side last season, scoring six goals in 15 appearances.
Is he related to Rees Greenwood? Heard a few murmorings about him last season with some of the lads I know but had no idea he was on this level of radar
How can you turn a premier giant down? Shame though if he looked promising which I assume he does given who he has signed for. Surely we have signed youngsters at a similar age from other clubs so no bitterness from me.
The affects of back to back relegations to league 1 have really hit home this past 6 weeks. You only have to look at our signings and which clubs they came from, and the fact we had a lad recently released from Port Vale playing for us last night to really hit it home how far weve fallen. Being 2 leagues away from the Prem will probably make alot of our youngsters sit up and think about their futures. Nobody gets recognised much outside of the Championship.
