And so? That makes it sensible to do what he did?

Any sensible club would have sold him a year before when he refused to sign a new contract,

If they force the issue, I can’t disagree. It works that way for any club and it can be argued that what’s the point of keeping an unsettled, unhappy player who doesn’t want to play for you?

The last major sale we had to make was Bale. He was determined to go and Levy got a world record fee for him. Thst was 5 years ago.

sounds similar to your situation with Toby if you don't sell him this year which would then invalidate your argument about your main players wanting to leave.

Same with the argument for Dembele.

For what it's worth, doing the best short term and doing the best long term is a hard act to balance. I understand why you would want to keep toby and sell dembele so things need to be looked as a whole.

For all you know, selling RVP a year before wouldn't have yielded that poor sum he went for. Firstly because he'd only had 1 decent season. Secondly because without him Arsenal might not have qualified for the CL

And what you won with that world record fee?

Works both ways. You could end up with a Virgil Van Dyke or you could end up with a Ronaldo/Suarez/Modric who all had stellar seasons for another year.

'Forcing the issue' is just another way of saying that a player wants to leave. It happens all the time, with all clubs.
I don't know why you keep trying to make out that somehow it's different for Spurs. It ain't.
If anything, you're a club that produces/develops good players, but doesn't win anything. So it's make you more prone to losing your best players.

Alderweireld is somebody Poch would rather keep, I feel. However, he’s obviously not desperate to keep him as he’s been very relaxed about the situation. If he won’t sign a new contract in the near future he will be sold.

Dembele, you keep harping on about. If he wants to go, Pochettino is quite happy to let him go. He’s 31 yrs old and injury prone,

Selling RVP the year before would have yielded at least double what Arsenal got for him. Plus there was the opportunity to sell him abroad rather than to assist a rival to yet another title.

Had Ronaldo really wanted to go before, he would have gone.

The issue isn’t whether or not Spurs are somehow magically immune from losing players to poachers. No one is claiming that, and yet again you are engaging in an argument that doesn’t actually exist.

What NSIS and I are taking issue with is the tacit assumption on the part of certain wumsters that Levy is more interested in selling our best players than in keeping them.

Do you think that’s the case? Or do you, like me, think that’s complete bollocks?

We bought some crap, true. But we also bought Eriksen.

We have improved massively in those 5 yrs. For the first time in ages we are seeing some consistency. We are now a regular CL club,

Win something? Yes it would be good, and it will come. You could say exacty the same of Liverpool and they’ve outspent us by hundreds of millions.

i harp on about Dembele because he's one of your best midfielders (although some of you feel he is past it) compared to what you currently have in that double pivot (wanyama who dropped off to injury, Dier who's never been as good as dembele, Winks). He's the only one who can drive with the ball and is built like a tank.

at the end of the day RVP, got them into the CL which is worth millions and i'm not sure he would have gone for 44m after 1 decent season at Arsenal (18 league goals). In comparisson we splurged 50m on Torres in a desperate Jan window and big spending City spent 25m on the likes of david silva, yaya toure and edin dzeko

Nobody has said that though HIAG. The point being made is that Spurs are not immune to the same market forces as all other clubs. If another club comes in for your players, and the player wants to go, then there's basically **** all Levy can do about it. As has been demonstrated time and again with your best players leaving.

Liverpool have spent more by about 50m (not including wages) since you sold Bale in 13/14

    used www.transferleague.co.uk

I haven't included all the money they've splurged this coming season (and which you haven't spent) as we are comparing who has spent more to be potless
