He's young and still learning, I wouldn't write him off completely yet.

 

He might come good in time, but he's going to need to find his level first. The Premier League is not his level at this time, and as I don't think that he's one of our four best CBs, there isn't going to be a lot of playing time available for him. At 24, he's gotta find regular action somewhere.

If Sparky deems him good enough for a place in the squad then I hope Saints fans give him a chance to improve when he is called on and not give him the Matty Targett treatment when he first broke through.

 

What`s all this spending lots of money and signing lots of players before the middle of July ? This isn`t the Saints way. Clearly the board have lost the plot and need to go - now !

 

I think Stephens is certainly worth his place in the squad but still would like to see him moved forward as a DM. Got to be better than Dier

 

Hughes had him as captain for the second half of the last game of the season. That seems to have gone unnoticed but says to me he's highly thought of.

 

If he gets a composed partner, he'll shine. His failings for the most part were the teams.

 

Unpopular opinion, I think Stephens is better and has the potential to be a better player than Bednarek. Bednarek came into a struggling defence and did really well, but I think his ability to head the ball and win an aerial dual alongside everyone else’s inability to do the same made everyone believe he’s a far better player than he is. I see him as a very limited football player. Quite happy to be proved wrong but that’s my opinion of him right now. I’ll be interested, going into a fresh season, to see who Hughes goes with.

 

And who is Chaz going to go on the piss with if Jack goes out on loan?....

 

Not sure I agree. He just flat-out left his man rather too frequently, and other than his partner constantly shouting at him to pick someone up rather than marking blades of grass, I'm not sure others are to blame for his defensive frailties.

 

I think Stephens, Bednarek and Hoedt are all good, premier league quality players - and they are all relatively young, so will get even better over time.

 

I think that it is important to consider them as a three. Vestergaard is sure to start. Then you need one on the left side which you might expect to be Hoedt, however two slowish defenders might not be great. Yoshida is the leader and Stephens can play as the spare defender as he is a better footballer. Bednarek is better in the air, however with Vestergaard's arrival I see him as back up. Therefore it looks like Vestergaard on the right, Hoedt on the left and Yoshida or Stephens in the centre.

 

I am kind of meh on Stephens, happy to keep him around. But I am definitely pro-Hoedt. He should easily be starting for us next season.

 

If a defensive coach just stood on his side of the training ground and screamed, “DON’T DIVE IN!” He’d improve masssively.

 

He’s not that young infootballing terms.

 

Only about 100 league games and not a regular in the PL, I think there is a chance that he will keep improving.

 

I see it as unlikely with us, he's not getting in the first team imo even with 3 at the back. I think a move to a Championship club would do him loads of good.

 

If he goes out on loan I wouldn't be too suprised, but Beef reckons the club rate him highly so i'll support the lad when he plays for us.
