A guy that gets 70 odd caps for a side like Germany is hardly average. Fact is that these 3 are all internationals. One a captain for his country and one a captain for his former club.

Steady on, who says we are world beaters..... All we need to do now is steady the ship, compete, give a good account of ourselves, punch above our weight, the players give 110% .... Only Arsene can turn average players into excellent players.... If you are expecting Grade A signings (ready-made players), then sorry you are in the wrong team. We are never going to shell out on top-top players....

Well they are three players we never had before. Would you rather watch the farce that was Sunday's performance again repeated over and over and over?

Having heard that we have signed park chu young and are very close to signing martesacker and andre santos and reports that we are interested in benayoun, alex and malouda. Were we to sign all of those players that would be a major boost and i could see us really cementing our place in the top 4 and maybe challenging for the title if we do manage to stay in touch with the top teams.

Gilberto was past it for the English league. He never kept up with the pace in his final season. Are you telling me that a 26 year old German CB is average and past his best? Santos was the LB for Brazil in the Copa and was good. So we got two players who start for Germany and Brazil. We have not seen these guys play in the prem so to say they will be like Gilberto in his final season is naive.

In my opinion the two defenders are good signings. Better than you already have in them positions definitely. Mertesacker will slip right in with Vermaelen. Vermaelen is the one who can get the ball down and use it while Mertesacker is the giant who will clear his lines and get his head on absolutely everything. Much better option than Djourou or Koscielny in my opinion.

Andre Santos is much more experienced than Gibbs and is possibly a better player than Clichy. Scored 10 goals in 55 games for Fenerbahce so he offers something a little bit extra. A bit of a defensive Michel Bastos. He is 28 so will help the youngsters out a bit more.

Park chu-Young is the one that baffles me. I don't think you need another option up front to be honest I thought Gervinho and Oxlade-Chamberlain were brought in as cover up front/wings. He has a better than average goalscoring record but I don't think he is a player who is drastically going to improve Arsenal.

Since Dein was ousted from the club, we've struggled in the transfer market. He is Wenger's right hand man, his son is Theirry Henry and Cesc Fabregas's agent. Dein is a wheeler dealer, much more efficient than anyone else at the club.
    Bring him back <ok>

I did answer your question. You said we sold 'better' players who where old before and now we have brought the same type of players according to you. First Per Mertesacker is going to be 27 years old and for a CB that is peak years. Santos is 28 years old and looked fine in the copa. Also with the time we have left and the LB's we have this guy is a very good purchase. We saw with our own eyes why Gilberto was moved on. The guy was awful in his final season. He moved to a slower and lesser league and was just about OK. Playing DM for Brazil was not hard work under Dunga. The guy set that side up to counter therefore the DM was never exposed like he would be at Arsenal. They where compact and solid and that was perfect for Gilberto. Park is very cheap and even then he carried his team last season where he got 10 goals for a team that went down. Also looked good in the world cup last year. For the money we are spending on him, its not a massive risk. So like i said comparing Gilberto to these three is naive.

    Agreed.

Mertesacker is the only one out of the 3 that is any good. Santos is very inconsistent and only recently played for Brazil due to injuries, he didn't even make the world cup squad in 2010. And Chu Young Park, to be quite honest he will be lucky to make your bench.

I realise Wenger had to move quick but come on you Arsenal fans can't surely be pleased with these 3 signings (possibly with the exception of Mertesacker). It seems like the two people that needed replacing have been forgotten about, what's going to happen in midfield?

  12. I don't think anyone is seriously suggesting that we're world beaters overnight. It's more the relief and elation that we are finally bringing in much-needed reinforcements. Hopefully these are the players who will bring us back to a level of performance that is expected of us, the whole being the sum of it's parts. The rebuilding isn't over by any means. You're right about the dead wood. They are also sucking away at the bank account which could be put to good use. I doubt if any or many managers have had their transfers work out according to plan or expectation. Even SAF has signed some howlers. Hopefully by the end of business tomorrow night we will have a squad that keeps us in the hunt not only for a Top 4 place but perhaps some silverware. We're only into the third game of the season and while the last one hadn't ended well nor this one begun, I believe we are making real attempts at reversing the trend. Time once again to get behind the team I say <ok>

We signed Chu Young Park and should complete Santos and Mertesacker any time now.

  14. I believe the rebuilding process is already underway and remember too that players like Ryo Miyaichi who has in fact acquitted himself very well on loan has not even played in the first team for us yet. Who knows what else may be on offer before the transfer window shuts tomorrow? If all the new faces can along with the ones we have be galvanised into an effective machine then I think we should be glad of that. There is still quite a lot to be done like shifting the players that are unlikely to contribute to our success. However there is good reason to assume that we can still be in a position to make it to the Top 4. You never know what happens in F1 and I dare say one could apply that observation to football too. This time a month or two from now, I expect we'll all be much happier bunnies. <ok>

    -----------------Szczesny------------------
    --Sagna--Mertesacker--Vermaelen--Santos--
    ------------Song--------Wilshere-----------
    -Walcott---------Ramsey----------Gervinho-
    -----------------v.Persie-------------------

Fairly confident, although I would prefer either another DM with Wilshere pushed forwards or a creative, attacking midfielder in place of Ramsey.

Without a doubt we need a new CM. According to some guy from the BBC the club hope to get one more player. This one could be the big money buy.

considering that it took 2 days to confirm the park signing, but the headline on arsenal.com is we have agreed to sign him(same as joel campbell) we just gotta wait for permit i think, which we defo should get.

mertesacker should have signed by tonight as the german manager said he gave him just 1 day off, so he will be going back tonight
