This puts us right back on the map on the European stage. It might not be for much money, but we've grabbed a player who has often been touted as one of the next big things in world football. He might not necessarily end up as the next Maldini, but the buzz around him is huge and a deal like this will get everyone talking.

It really is the perfect deal to happen right before the transfer window. It's a coup, a statement of ambition and is sure to grab the attention of many of our potential signings. This transfer, along with our good position in the EPL table going into the international break, could be quite a surprisingly large factor in getting some of our key targets.

    Happy days <diva>

But now we have to sign at least 20 italian players so he won't feel lonely

As big a coup as Ben Arfa IMO, a good signing and a world-renowned name to get some positive media attention for a change as well.

    That and he's class :D

This! I've been saying since we were first linked with him, IF we pull it off its as big, if not a little bigger than the Ben Arfa coup! As someone has already said though, watch his FIFA ranking take an absolute raping though!

Very well said Chappaz. Clubs will have taken note of this, and may start to treat us a bit differently. I must say, I wasnt expecting an Italian International, from one of the biggest clubs in the world to sign this transfer window.

So how does the Newcastle back line compare to the rest of the league now? For the first time ever will Newcastle have one of the most reliable (and threatening) back lines in the league

Had we kept Enrique and put in Santon for Simpson, I'd say we'd easily a top 3/4 back line!

I'd say even bigger than Ben Arfa. His performances in the CL against the likes of C.Ronaldo at only 17 years of age gained him worldwide recognition, and he's thought of as a phenomenal future prospect on the world stage (well he was, anyway).

The Ben Arfa signing created a lot of buzz mostly in France, but the signing of Davide Santon will create a buzz right across Europe.

Plus, as much as it dislike it somewhat, the kid becomes a ****ing legend on Football Manager. That means every footie fan who's ever played it are all tugging themselves off over him. Basing his ability on FM stats is mong-ish, but it just adds more to the buzz of the whole thing, so I don't mind.

Im happy that Ashley for once has put his hand in his pocket and brought in a player in a position we need. To find out it is Santon is very pleasing..

Not only is he highly touted (Arsenal fans are moaning that they have missed out on him) but also he can cover two positions from what Iv heard with ease!

If a striker comes in tomorrow and with the start to the league we have had, I feel we are on the up on what is the rollercoaster ride that is Newcastle United!! I just hope were not on the big dipper (okay thats all my rollercoaster analogies used up in one day).

His first statement as a Newcastle player was to confirm he had not seen any Mackem's in Milan.

This signing has to make us more attractive to players around the world. The quality we have on our books now in HBA, Santon, Colo, Cabaye. We're a club on the up.

Aye. Very right. Phil Thompson, and Alan Hansen will be the ones to rip to shreads the most after an unlucky 1-0 defeat no doubt. In Thompsons case will say how Colo and Santon would probably have been world class players at Liverpool etc etc.

Dont forget Sunderland fans either. No doubt will be happier with Michael Turner than Stevie Taylor <doh>

They may learn some day :p
