Oh it’s Soft Machine. Very good. Robert Wyatt link gave it away. Is he still alive?

Got it, it's from a William S Burroughs novel.

The french translation is Machine Molle.

1- They were one of my favourite bands when I was young and pretentious.

2- I did admit that I hadn't thought the question through properly.

Now, sadly, you have opened the literary avenue which is fertile and fascinating ground for me......
The Matching Mole clue was it for me, I knew that Robert Wyatt (a kind of hero of mine, though I am a respecter rather than a fan of his music) was in the highly influential Soft Machine, and I knew the link to the book. And it is an excellent term for the body, from a junkie.

OK ten bands have drawn their name from the novel A Clockwork Orange.

    Name 3.

Droogs wins it for you. There are three bands called essentially Clockwork Orange (one with plural oranges, one with French clockwork). Korova Milk Bar is another one. I only knew the first two you spotted. Heaven 17 are actually named after a fictional band in the book.

My answer was last Christmas no1 of the decade...they were all Xmas No1s (which is why I extended the sequence to BandAid andWestlife)...but if it is those 3 uniquely I do not know the answer
