Most bananas grown in the world are the Cavendish variety, developed to get rid of the seeds which aren’t tasty, and grown through vegetative rather than sexual reproduction. They replaced the Gros Michel variety which was wiped out by a disease in the fifties, and are now suffering from the same disease, being eradicated in Asia, only a matter of time until it reaches South America and the Caribbean. The race is on to develop a new strain of banana, probably from the five original wild banana trees surviving in Madagascar. I like bananas.
