England haven't beaten anybody yet! Two group stage wins against no-marks. Lost against Belgium reserves. Failed to beat weakened Colombia in two hours, got through via a pot-luck penalty shoot-out. Belgium have knocked out Japan and Brazil. Not on penalties, by beating them in 90 minutes. And they beat us. France have knocked out Argentina and Uruguay. Russia have knocked out Spain. Croatia beat Argentina 3-0 in their group game, and won their group also beating Nigeria and Iceland. Sweden won their group - which had Mexico and Germany in it - and beat Mexico in their group game. And Southgate crows about thrashing Panama and winning a penalty shoot-out.

I appreciate the sentiment. When England achieve something (like beating Sweden today without needing a pot-luck penalty decider) I will raise a glass of pop in celebration too
Spot on. I will continue to be entirely unconvinced that England have made any progress under Gareth Southgate. Eventually we will face an opponent (be it Croatia or France most probably) who will not dally around with us for 120 minutes but will send us packing without breaking a sweat - unless Southgate can prove that England are capable of beating a decent side - like Sweden - in open play. Without pot-luck penalties and preferably without VAR penalties either. I'll begin to believe when they begin to achieve.

Nobody is making out that England are a top football team but you can only beat what is put in front of you. Greece weren’t the best football team when they won the European Championships a number of years ago. Southgate has done a good job getting a formation that suits us and instilling belief in the players. I don’t care if we win via penalties. It is still winning.
Portugal weren’t the best team at Euro 16 - they won it Denmark weren’t the best team at Euro 92 - they won it. Who cares ? The likes of Laudrup are still national heroes in their country to this day. In 2060 nobody will give a toss that Sir Gareth Southgate needed penalties to beat Colombia
As I have said before, I'm not an England fan. I find international football pointless and irrelevant. Nationalist jingoism. Or Jingoistic Nationalism. Whatever. This World Cup has provided some decent games to take my mind off the closed club season here at home. That's all. Disagree with my views on England's performance if you like, I'm not bothered. If I am bothering or upsetting anybody with my opinions on this subject I will gladly stop posting them, as I did on the original World Cup thread here.
