This world cup has been great, the likes of Iran and Japan have been fun to watch. I'm not sure if Scotland were allowed in though that they would impress anyone.
Think Mordor would be less depressing to watch than Scotland. Anyway, even if it was expanded to 100 teams they possibly still wouldn't qualify.
I am not running the Prediction Competition if they do. It will be a nightmare. Hopefully Nev will be back by then.
Actually think that there are absolutely no football reasons for expanding the competition from 32 to 48 teams. Currently have the right formula of the majority if top teams and a few game tryers. Expansion to 48 teams without just adding meaningless Grouo stage games would include the few decent teams from Europe who failed to qualify (Italy, Netherlands, maybe Ireland etc) maybe another couple from S America and Africa but no additional teams worthwhile from Asia, America/Central America. Its just a ploy to get China and the USA in every time. It would make the European Qualifying games even more meaningless as well.
I like the idea of 48 nations. More one-sided group games, but offering more places to developing football nations in more geographical areas. South-east Asia, for example, has never had representation. Sub-Saharan Africa could do with more candidates, too.
Then have a '2nd level' competition the following month sort of like the Paralympics (as that is what the standard of football would be like). One of the SE Asian nations would be happy to hold it.
It works perfectly well the way it is. You want to watch the best National teams from the region, not the best plus some also-rans who sneaked in owing to more qualifying places. Just like the Champions League was expanded (and probably will be again) the World Cup is going the same way. It makes a mockery of the qualifying groups going forward. It's supposed to be the World Cup Finals, not the World Cup - a history of too many qualification matches.
It’s a barely disguised attempt to get the revenue of China, India and the US in every time. **** all to do with football. Good to see FIFA as corrupt as ever.
