I disagree with you. I don’t think he is under appreciated or additionally he’s not under rated.

Everyone knows how hard he works, but that isn’t very often enough. He is very much a defenders nightmare but I’m sure he’s not much of a nightmare for opposing managers.

One simple example of what I mean: last year, working hard was not a problem for Saints. Scoring goals was.

    Yours, a Shane Long fan.

I half agree agree with you, though you did prove my point. You only have the opinion you just voiced because you understand football , your average “fan” would see his goal record as a striker and instantly label him as ****, they don’t see all the other attributes he has to his game.

Yea correct though I don’t think we would of scored many more goals last season even if we had Ronaldo upfront.

I don’t agree with you at all. You’re basically saying that unless people agree with your point of view then they are merely average fans, potentially of limited football knowledge (I’m presuming that from context of your post).

It comes across a little pious, that’s all.

I don’t rate him, never have as I don’t believe it scares defenders as mistake rarely lead to goals for Long.

Arsenal at home in the 4-0, I’m sure there may be a few more, but doubt many.

For me a striker is there to bring others into play and score goals. He can barely control the ball, can trap a ball further than I can kick one and we all know his scoring record...

That's the thing I don't get. We know he doesn't score but he doesn't create anything either. He annoys defenders by kicking their ankles, and that's it. He's only got 11 assists for us ever and 2(!) in the last 2 seasons. He's 31, so any pace/work rate that he used to have is gone. He should be in a Championship mid table team. I'm sure he's a nice guy though. Sorry.

Surely a player is more likely to attract bids if he’s having a good preseason anyway?

On the other hand they could get injured, not be putting their all in if they know they are off or be blocking the way for someone who is going to be with us for the season (or a youth player getting a bit of a run out with the first team).

None of which happened to Clasie, and the youth players who were taken all got game time, with the exception of Jack Rose and Harry Lewis.

I'm not massively against him going, just seems odd to take him. We will be planning for the new season trying things out/different systems and personnel and if someone is very likely not be here it seems odd to bother taking him. He can still do fitness stuff at home. If we hadn't taken Clasie then maybe another youth player could have gone in his place

Anyway it isn't really a big deal

It’s not, but don’t forget Hughes won’t have seen Clasie play, so it’s worth him having a look before the final decision to get rid is taken.

Exactly, I’m with you. Cannot, and never have understood why so many people love him. I see more love for Long than for JWP for example, which to me is absolutely barmy. Long is utterly useless and JWP has amazing potential

Well not really , it’s the same with anything the more you know about something the deeper understanding you have and therefore can appreciate what’s involved. All I meant was to your average Joe a striker is there to score goals and if they don’t there labled as crap by many, they dont look beyond that and see the bigger picture.

In fairness, whenever Long steps on to a field the general reaction from commentators etc will always be, “well you know what you’re going to get from Shane Long” so it’s no trade secret!

Yes, because watching football and being in and around it is their profession so the knowledge is there. Your “average” fan who only watches a game when it’s Barcelona v Madrid and watch Messi or Ronaldo smash 3 goals in at a time wouldn’t have a clue would they, is the point I’m trying to make. Maybe I’m explaining it badly, but I know what I mean <laugh>
