Off Cavani’s face, shoulder or chest? They all count. Difficult for Portugal to play on the counter now, and Uruguay will be quite happy to sit back and hope for a counter........

It looked like the bottom of his face. Portugal have their work cut out now as Uruguay have yet to concede in this tournament.

To be fair, it was a great move.

Contrast the body language, animation, involvement and energy of Ronaldo with Messi.

The ‘panel’ (aka planks) on ITV singing the praises of Suarez, especially his work ethic. Fair enough, but he also spent 5 minutes on the ground feigning a head injury. Here’s an idea, any player who stops play while holding his head is assumed to be potentially concussed and has to leave the pitch for a medical assessment, like in rugby or American football. While we’re at it, any player claiming injury but rolling around while doing it is assumed to be having an epileptic fit and is sent away for electro convulsive therapy.

Uruguay are exceptionally well organised and nobody can doubt their commitment. Plus they have some good players.

Messi is spoilt at club level, surrounded by true world-class players fitted into a system set up to support him. He doesn't have that luxury at International level and has been found wanting time and again - he just doesn't seem to be able to drag his team-mates along in his wake and his head goes down. Ronaldo however, doesn't seem to have players at club level who are quite in Barcelonas league (hence they haven't won the title for a few years), but when the going gets a bit tough he seems to be able to dig in and do the hard work (doesn't always work, but you can see the effort he puts in). Odious as some of his less gamesmanship mannerisms may be, it's this drive and determination, his constant attention to detail on the training field that make him stand out over Messi IMO

Agree, but they should be able to have a roll-on sub to not penalise genuinely fouled against players. It’s been awful this whole WC and don’t think anyone has been even booked. Neymar had a penalty rescinded having clearly dived on the clip and still nothing.

Hoping that Uruguay make it a double win for me. Anything to stop the cameras taking every opportunity when the ball goes dead to zoom in on Ronaldo.

Uruguay are impressively organised at the back. It's a wall of blue shirts for Portugal to break down - Godin and Gimenez, both of Athletico, are impassable at the moment.

Isn’t VAR meant to be used when the ref makes a glaring mistake - like not giving Portugal a free kick just now?

France v Uruguay - interesting QF. Uruguay have a much better defence than Argentina, but Mbappe & co will be better in attack than Portugal offered tonight.

Is the World Cup devalued by the elimination of Messi & Ronaldo? Personally don't think so, but FIFA will be gutted, as will the media.
