Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald says he hopes to announce a new signing later today. The Black Cats chief is working hard behind the scenes to strengthen Jack Ross' squad, while also bring down the wage bill by getting some high earners off the books.

So far, Alim Ozturk, Chris Maguire and Jon McLaughlin have arrived at the Stadium of Light, with Jason Steele, Paddy McNair and Jack Rodwell leaving the club, along with John O'Shea, Billy Jones, Kazenga LuaLua and Marc Wilson, whose contracts have expired.

Those departures have helped free up money for more incomings, but some supporters have shown frustration after striker Lyle Taylor opted to sty in London and join Charlton rather than move to Wearside.

Donald says Sunderland are close to announcing a couple of new signings, however.

Replying to a fan on Twitter who said that Donald had claimed there would be five or six new signings, but only three had arrived, the Sunderland owner said: "It's actually 4/5 just not announced yet.

"I can't make a lad move his family if he doesn't want btw. If doing the right deal for the club means I hope to sign 6 and end up with 4 then so be it."

Then asked if there would be any new signings announced today, Donald replied: "Yes I think so."

Sunderland are keen to add a couple of new faces to the squad before they jet out to Portugal for a training camp.

The Black Cats have held talks with Hibernian's out-of-contract midfielder Dylan McGeouch, while Peterborough defender Jack Baldwin is also on their radar. Manchester United left-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has also emerged as a loan target.

People whinging at him on Twitter when the pace he's moving at is ****ing fine.

That's the problem with social media. It gives a voice to those who really shouldn't have one.

Its embarrassing isn't it. Worse that he feels the need to respond to these planks.

He was funny in the podcast - he said he is fairly up to speed with those "following"him who are SAFC fans and thos who are NUFC fans pretending!

But there are some idiots whinging at him for not making 6 signings! Any realistic person should be over the moon with the business we've done so far. Rodwell and Steele leaving should surely count for an awful lot of leeway to give the man. And we've signed 3 players - OK I (as said before) know nothing about them but christ we're in league one - not like an end of career Messi would sign for us is it!!

It wouldn't suprise me in the slightest if he was an active reader on here. He seems the type that would read through fan forums to be able to have a better understanding about what we all genuinely feel and to be able to relate himself to the club and the fans better.

We’ve said before owners, managers and scouts could do a lot worse than reading forums.

Who knows more than fans about what is visibly missing or required?

The good thing is he's wise enough and thick skinned enough not to give a **** about people on Twitter having panic attacks in his direction. Seems pretty unflappable so far.

Sunderland are closing in on the signing of Tom Flanagan. The 26-year-old was made available for transfer by Burton Albion at the end of last season and the Black Cats have made a move for his services.

LIVE: Sunderland transfer news as Cats close in on more signings

The Northern Ireland international is primarily a centre-back but can play anywhere across the back four.

He is expected to move on a free transfer.

Burton boss Nigel Clough told Burton Live in May that it was a budgetary decision to let Flanagan go.

He said: "He's got a year left, but we have to free something up somewhere.

"With John Brayford, if Damien McCrory stays (he has been offered a new deal), and Ben Turner stepping in at left-back as he did, I don't think we can carry all three.

"He's made 57 Championship appearances in the last two years, and he did well.

"He had a new lease of life, almost, at full-back.

"The reasoning for bringing him back was he covers you all the way across the back four.

"That's still the case, but we have to make cuts somewhere and unfortunately, that's one of them.

"He hasn't done anything wrong greatly. It's just that, as I say, if Damien signs, it'll be Brayford and Damien who'll be our full-backs."

Flanagan made 27 Championship appearances last season and made his international debut last June.

Jack Ross is in the market for defensive reinforcements after the departures of John O'Shea and Marc Wilson. Lamine Kone and Bryan Oviedo are also expected to leave the club this summer.

The Black Cats boss has already added Alim Ozturk to his ranks and Flanagan could join in the coming days.

Following the imminent departure of Jack Rodwell, Ross is expected to make at least one addition before the team fly out to Portugal for a pre-season training camp.

Give over man. Everyone has the right to an opinion wether you like it or not, you can disagree, fair enough.

But people are allowed to voice their opinion, we don't have a dictator state

Yeah, but before the advent of Twitter you had to demonstrate that you had some modicum of intelligence before inflicting your opinion on the world. Now, any halfwit with a smartphone can have their inane ramblings read by millions. Is that a good thing? Probably not.

No you didn’t - you had to show you had good grammar and a point of view the printed press editors felt was worth the ink - just because you may not agree with the point of view or the apparent ridiculousness of the point ( and by the way I agree that sweating about why isn’t it the 6 you said is a bit daft ) doesn’t mean the question isn’t irrelevant or important from the person who has raised it.

I didn't say they shouldn't have an opinion but you already know that. I said they shouldn't have a voice. They shouldn't have access or a direct line to these people. They haven't earned it and they're not qualified not emortionaly or intellectually intelligent enough to use it positively.

Hence that Sweden player got dogs abuse from fans the other day.

Those who work for the BNP shouldn't have access to those who support the history books as they believe dinosaurs are a conspiracy.

Those who are inclined towards *****philia should have no ****ing stake in how child care centres are ****ing run.

Every **** has an opinion and that won't change. But some people's opinions really shouldn't be voiced or heard.

You just fail to to take the core of a post because it doesn't suit this prolonged wind up you're on.

I'm done with you. You're ****ing boring.
