This is tougher. In terms of global influence, you'd have to say Jesus (I hear once he was a right back!!), but he wasn't the best. Mick Mills, although Egland international was past his best when he came to Saints. Ivan Golac is legendary and one of my favourites Until someone comes up with a better, I'll have to say Jason Dodd, for his consistency, longevity and for that corner he scored against the skates! Edited to add that Peter Rodrigues must also have a shout
I was a great admirer of Mick Mills and was most surprised that he didn't make a success of football management but for me the right back who gave me the greatest pleasure to watch was Ivan Golac. As a club I have always thought we have had better left backs than right backs.
I agree completely Godders. He was my favourite. I'm not sure he was the best though, but definately my favourite.
See Chilco, we live and learn everyday. I didn't realise he was a Rightback. Admittedly you must be a little older than me tongue, as I never saw Webb play in his Chelsea pomp, but I always had in my mind that he was a midfielder. Today I have learned something new.
If greatest ever team then would think Sir Alf Ramsey must be up there at right back,,personal favourite Ivan Golac,,although just saw David Webb play before he went to Chelsea and my Dad rated him highly,,,Shilton with out a doubt in goal as he organized the defence as well as fantastic between the sticks,,can anyone remember Gerry Gurr. Great prospect shame he got injured although I do remember rumour about him and Mrs Paine,,could you imagine that type of gossip nower days,,not good idea chasing club captains wife. (rumour of course )
Fair enough mate. I actually saw him play in goal for Saints, when Campbell Forsyth broke his leg against Liverpool, and you weren't allowed subs in those days, so Webby put the jersey on. Still lost (2-0 I think) but you had to be versatile in those days!
...and off topic momentarily, that classic Patrick kit still looks so good, i hope we revive that in seasons to come.
Sadly I'm too young to know much about Golac, but I always thought Dodd was pretty decent. Nobody could forget this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jpiu8z-esAQ (I don't care what people say, it's his goal damnit
There are other Mr Grumpy's on this website Godders.....questioning threads, you bloody name it.....I'm getting bloody grumpy myself now........ERIC bloody MARTIN
Best right back......JOE bloody KIRKUP............hardest player EVER, his opposite number......left back, DENNIS HOLLYWOOD...
I used to play inside left which shows my age and I would not have wanted to play against Joe Kirkup.
GK. for me shilts, even though i was too young to see him play, record England caps England legend keeper,so must be ours? RB.also too young for golac even though dad said he was class! only ever got 1 cap for Yugoslavia though, and probably suffered because he couldn't leave the communist state till he was 28 ... so would have to be doddy due to the fact i can only ever remember him or inadequate rb's like telfer
