Yugoslavia/Serbia & Montenegro/Serbia have always had an achilles heel: in 1998 they had a great attack (Mijatovic, Savicevic, Stojkovic, Jugovic, Stankovic) but a shaky defence and a goalkeeper who apparently got the gig by getting tokens from crisp packets, in Euro 2000 their attack was a little bit better (Mijatovic, Kezman, Stojkovic, Jugovic, Stankovic, Savo Milosevic on an absolute tear) but their defence was non-existent, in 2006 their defence was tougher but their midfield was sorely lacking in creativity they usually resorted to humping the ball Route One towards an ageing pairing of Kezman and Milosevic, in 2010 their defence was pretty solid but their forward options so threadbare they had Nikola Zigic up top due to him being approximately 16ft tall, and this year they've looked good in defence and midfield yet anonymous up front. At the risk of starting another Balkan war, what's become very obvious in the past twenty years is that, while the Serbs provided the steel of the old Yugoslav teams, it was the Croats and Montenegrins providing the silk - and to make that more obvious, I'll just point out that Mijatovic and Savicevic were both born in what is now the Montenegrin capital Podgorica, while Sinisa Mihajlovic was born in what is now the Croatian city of Vukovar.
