Adam Webster: The new Bristol City defender compared to Manchester City star John Stones
He has been praised throughout his career

Bristol City look set to sign Adam Webster from Ipswich Town after the two clubs agreed a deal for the player.

The defender is undergoing a medical at Ashton Gate ahead of a move to the Robins , believed to be around £3.5m.

What can Robins fans expect from their new man? He is being brought in as a replacement for Aden Flint, who departed for Middlesbrough earlier today.

Yet he is a different type of player to Flint - the Daily Mail's Secret Scout compared him to John Stones.

"Webster likes to bring the ball out from defence rather than just launch it forward," the Secret Scout wrote. "Even when pressed, Webster has the ability, vision and skill to get out of trouble and make a pass."

His presence of mind, calmness and hard work have all been praised, and he is a strong reader of the game.

The scout wrote: "It seems to suit Webster to play alongside a more traditional stopper in an orthodox back four, though I think he could also play in the middle of a three-centre-back formation."

Webster's height is 6ft 2in, so whilst he is not as tall as the towering Flint, he is clearly a good height for a Championship defender.

His level of physicality could be higher, as could his speed, but his pace can be negated by his reading of the game and positional sense.

Webster says he has always been encouraged to dribble out of defence, but it is just about learning the right time to do so.

He said to the Green 'un : "The gaffer (Mick McCarthy) definitely encourages me to do it. He says to me, 'you can do it, of course you can do it, but you’ve just got to pick the right time'.

"Sometimes you might have to boot it, sometimes you can break out and bring others into play."

Former Tractor Boys boss McCarthy was a big fan of the player.

He said: "I hope he continues to blossom because he has fabulous potential, he really has.

"I saw him play against us in the FA Cup and I said to Marcus (Evans) 'sign him'. That is probably the first time I’ve really hung my hat on one and said 'if he’s in our budget, just sign him'. He backed me on that one.

"He was an absolute no-brainer. I’m still surprised we managed to get him. I’m delighted we did."

Interesting but doesn’t seem to fit the ‘hoof it to Diedhiou’ tactic we employed at the latter part of last season.
    We shall see.....

Good business sell Filint and get in a younger replacement with money left over. Now if we can sell Reid and get in Marriott for less than I think the club has done really well and couldn’t really ask for anything more

We can’t get Marriott in, if we do Taylor won’t get his game time and RR will bleat on.

In truth we didn’t really have a choice about selling Reid & Flint , as long as we get decent replacements I won’t have any complaints , this lad seems pretty good and McCarthy knows a bit about centre halves in particular, so if it’s true he rates him that bodes well.

Will be interesting to see who else we bring in. We need a replacement for Reid, Mags has already left and Bryan is very likely to be on the move soon.

I believe we still need a left back , with Kelly and Vyner both being used as back ups that would leave Bailey Wright , Baker and Webster and Pisano right back .

I think Pack is the least likely to go, but as far as I know he only has 1 year left on his contract , so he needs to decide soon .

It's all about expectation levels Ashton - you and the Krauts expect it - we just live in hope.....<laugh><ok>

The Krauts going out at the group stage was a big shock to their system - as for you, savour the memories and keep singing the tune..............

Somebody tag this post please. If he turns out to be a dud it will be a race between RR and RP to slam LJ for signing him.

'Bristol City are expected to announce the signing of Ipswich Town defender Adam Webster imminently.

Webster is reported to have passed his medical, which took place yesterday.

With a deal agreed between the clubs and personal terms set there is now nothing in the way of holding up the deal.

City wasted no time in lining up a replacement for star centre back Aden Flint.'

Ipswich fan in peace, you've got yourself a good defender in Adam Webster. Has an eye for a pass and is comfortable on the ball. He was developing well at Town, but McCarthy's tactics arguably restricted him from showing his full potential of footballing ability. A word of warning regarding his fitness levels though. He was often injured over the two seasons we had him, managing 25 games out of 46 last season, and then 23 games out of 46 in the one before because of injuries. He is also prone to lapses of concentration and was responsible for us conceding several goals last season.

Oh dear - hopefully that's behind him, because our treatment room was particularly crowded last season...

    A question. No two.

McCarthy's tactics arguably restricted him from showing his full potential of footballing ability.

In a team that plays to feet and short would that potential and skill be more evident?

His errors. Is there a theme?
