The trouble with that is Marriott is unlikely to come here.

    Looks like Plan C now.

Indeed and we may well have to find a Holt/Vardy in the lower leagues!!! <yikes> #wemustsignastriker

Edit - I see Holt has passed his first coaching badge

I wouldn't be so sure. Wednesday might be asking that now, but when everyone laughes and walks away, they will realise they are either stuck with him or going to have to play nicer. The wages he's on, I reckon they'll be lucky to cover those with no fee involved. It will all depend quite how desperate they are to get him out the door. Look at us and Naismith. Rhodes has not yet fallen so far, but Rhodes ain't hot property and playing for their U23 for £2m a season will be something they are/should be desperate to avoid.

    Bah!

It's a negotiation like any other. They have to reconcile their 'financial fair play' problem and keeping him on is an obstacle to that. SW will know the 'ins and outs' of this from our own situation. Any striker we sign is likely to cost at least £1m in wages plus a fee so it could still happen, but I reckon we've left our offer on the table and walked away.

Wednesday are a long way from our valuation though. £3m plus presumably his full wages (£30k, £40k p/w?) is around £5m for the loan of a player for a year. I'd imagine we were offering closer to 50% of his wages with no loan fee. There's a lot of room between those positions for somebody else to come in and make an offer to Wednesday, whilst I can't see us upping our bid much.

Like Rick says, I hope we've walked away and will pursue other targets. However, the idea that we might end up going back to Wednesday late in August without another striker signed is not a pleasant thought.

Along similar lines, Shola Ameobi is out of contract this summer. Finally free to make the move he always should have.

That guy from Cork would be loaned out .
Marriott is way beyond our reach which is quite depressing, we will buy another Bundesliga 3 dud like SrBeny.

I didn’t think we needed to play 2 DMs so Thompson unfortunately sits behind Tettey and Godfrey in my suggestions

I can remember when some on here were keen on us paying £10m+ for McCormack.

    Too early to panic yet.

Not willing to write off Srbeny just yet. Given a full pre-season, he could come good this season. I reckon we'd hold on to Oliveira rather than cave in to SW on Rhodes. As I said, no need to panic yet!

I'm not writing off Srbeny yet, like Vrancic he may just need time. Though Vrancic had shown more even in the earlier games to suggest quality that indicated given time he could step up, I'm not so sure we've seen too many glimmers of that from Srbeny yet. This argument obviously also extends to Franke and Stiepermann but I can't see either making many appearances next season.
How long is Oliviera's contract? I have a feeling we could get stuck with him too.

    Bah!

It's really hard to figure out our midfield for next season.

Hernandes (and Jarvis...) are our only out-and-out wingers, with McLean, Stiepermann and Buendia able to play in wider areas. Then Tettey, Godfrey, Thompson, Vrancic, Trybull, Leitner all competing for central areas. Cantwell in the equation too. Picking 4 or 5 from that will be interesting. Or maybe we just don't play a striker and save the need to splash cash? 4-2-4 with a "front 4" of Hernandes, Leitner, McLean, Buendia?

I'm having the same problem DH. I think (or hope) that we will play a striker, but the midfield is a bit of a mystery. New signings may tell us more. If Wilson and or Sadlier are signed, it should mean more width. My hunch is that we'll play a deep playmaker (Leitner or Vrancic) in a three man midfield with the FBs/WBs pushing forward to provide width. Hernandez and Buendia could then have a free role to create movement up front supported by McLean or Trybull from midfield. That's my take anyway.

I can't, I can remember someone on here saying some on here would be keen on paying £10m + but it was untrue at the time and still untrue.

I don't think a single poster wanted him if truth be told.
