The winners go through to a round-robin contest to decide the finalists.

Starting with the big surprise of the round, Gabby Logan eliminated Glenn Hoddle, who was possibly being punished by karma for a previous life's misdemeanour, thus proving that sometimes nice hair can take you further than a silky passing technique and sensible analysis.

In a tightly contested tie, Tyldesley and Bilic went to extra time. The commentator's breadth of interesting factoids about the city, the stadium, the bloke who delivered his room service and Bilic's cousin kept him hanging on but in the end the Slav's good sense was too much and the tie was over without the need for penalties, which Tyldesley hadn't practised anyway, because apparently you can't replicate the pressure.

Vicki Sparks has had a good tournament as the new girl on the blokes' block and is surely part of a future that mopey misogynists think will bring about Armageddon. However, in this case the Twitter tutters were content to see Jenas progress.

In a packed stadium, another fan favourite, Ali McCoist, was too busy clowning around, recounting tales of airplane misadventures and the previous night's boozing with Ian Wright, which was taking its toll, as Keane ran rings around him. Rangers still unable to overturn Celtic.

live blog of day 1.

 

The players have been split into three groups of nine, nine and eight, with their arrival times staggered throughout the morning.

After eating breakfast together, each group will head to Melwood’s indoor-outdoor performance gym for Functional Movement Screen and Range of Motion tests, before lactate testing takes place on the outdoor pitches.

Following a break of around an hour where they are able to eat and rest, the players will then go to the facility’s rehab gym to complete jumps and specific assessments.
