Lee Johnson explains the strategy at Bristol City should the club lose any star players The Robins boss was speaking ahead of their busy pre-season schedule. Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has revealed that he is hopeful of keeping his best players at Ashton Gate this season ahead of what is set to be a testing pre-season schedule. The Robins will play seven games in total, including home games against both Shrewsbury and AFC Bournemouth, as well as a European tour to Marbella. Speaking to the club's BCTV channel at the end of last week the head coach revealed his hopes of retaining Joe Bryan, Bobby Reid, Aden Flint and others, but he also explained what would happen if anyone is sold. The Robins would look to immediately replace any outgoings, and Johnson would hope that the new man coming in would be welcomed and trusted at Bristol City. “We hope we retain our best players,” explained Johnson. “If by some situation we lose one, two or three of our players that people are used to seeing, then it is vital that we buy into the new player that comes into replace them. “We need to create a positive atmosphere around that player that allows them to perform excellently. “I think we are in a good place, though and like I have said before, if anything does happen that perhaps isn’t ideal, it will still be a decision based on how we can push the club forward.” The 37-year-old is also looking forward to meeting up again with his Bristol City squad ahead of the new Championship season. “It will be good to see the lads, I am looking forward to seeing them and getting them back into training. I do miss them, as much as they annoy the life out of me,” joked Johnson. "It is a great period this because it is a chance to bed in the new bits and style of play tactically that you want and layer on top of that the social side of it and enjoy each other's company. “The fans coming away with us in a nice environment is a nice feeling as well and we have got some tough games in pre-season. “We will definitely learn from last season. We will then look at trying to find these tweaks that makes us better and continue to progress moving forward.” https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport...lee-johnson-explains-strategy-bristol-1707081
Well that is a great strategy, replace if any of the better players are sold ,a beefed up 7 game preseason against various skill level teams and a European/Spanish tour, sounds good.
Normal PR spin , In summary , hope to keep our best players , if not will look to replace them and we will all need to get behind the replacements even if they aren’t ideal. It’s the last paragraph that worries me slightly.
We will end up like last season scraping around the left overs. Cannot believe we will act if we sell. If they want out get them gone to the highest bidder and have your replacement in for pre- season. I really am worried about this coming season, typically we scramble around again for signings.
Don't worry we'll get signings. Whether they'll be better than the players we sell only time will tell. LJ tried last year to replace Flint by signing Bailey Wright, what a joke. Rumour is BW will be gone by January. If we sell Reid, our top scorer by default (LJ's words) last season, then LJ had better improve on his pathetic Striker transfer record - signed Djuric (crock), Engvall (useless), Woodrow (unused) and the spitting Fammy our £5million record signing. I hope we get good money for Reid, not that I'd ever want him to leave if LJ used him as he did pre Christmas but know it will be lump it to the big men Djuric(if fit) or/and our banned Fammy. LJ has signed Marley Watkins, interestingly BCFC are the first club that's paid money (£1million) to sign him. To be fair most fans think Brownhill, another who LJ's previously worked with, has been a success. Other positive news - Ashton is joining the EFL Board. This is the first step in Ashton leaving City, a while soon and Lansdown will say 'Mark has decided he can't do 2 jobs, so he goes with our blessings'. Lansdown doesn't admit mistakes.
That's good news RP, Mark Ashton to join EFL board as representative of the Championship, with all of his new , soon to be contacts our signings should drastically improve, don't you think? https://www.efl.com/news/2018/june/...-board-as-representative-of-the-championship/
I love your optimism in the system wiz but remember Qatar was awarded the World Cup. Will his moving away help City in the long term? I might get some weird responses on that question based on your opinion of Ashton being hired in the first place.
Brownhill, Fammy and Tammy were all good LJ signings. There has also been the dross of the January debacle - although I was initially excited by Walsh and Kent and they turned out to be duds - but that’s just like Danny Rose was for us all those years back - what a useless twat he was - yet here he is in Russia playing for our country on the biggest football stage in the world. I wouldn’t have let him make the tea. It’s a funny old game - I wonder if Diony will ever make it as a footballer somewhere........
We are a selling club of that I have no doubt Our best players are being sold (and good luck to them) but only time will tell whether we can recruit adequate replacements. We continue to preach about certain things and now have MA on the EFL board....hooray !? But I can never quite get over the nagging and persistent feeling that we don't really have an appetite for the big time. If things go badly from the start of next season then there may be fireworks well before November 5th.
Problem is the conversation is about the players we have moved on, you know Engvall,Kent, Woodrow,Diony, O'Neil, Steele,Garita,Flint, Magnusson and Reid, the conversation should be about who we have signed, you know Marley Watkins, Adam Webster and more to come - For God's sake give LJ a chance and I am not in the LJ luvie band but he is doing all right, oh I'm not in meltdown I am honestly getting quite excited about a fresh new approach to next season. If it goes wrong I retain the right to criticise.
Come the beginning of the new season I will be excited too, will have forgotten those that have left and will be loudly cheering the ones in red and white , at the moment I am jealous you have reached that state already , please allow me to get my head around the changes already made and panic about the ones to come. We can’t all be reasonable whilst many changes are being made to our beloved club
It was Nathan Baker who LJ signed to potentially replace Flint, not Wright, though he was admittedly also an LJ signing. I think we as fans have been harsh on Wright, he's been played out of position for the vast majority of his time here. Djuric never suffered injury problems before coming to City, I'd suspect that has now passed. Fammy can only be classed as a success. He had Premier League interest last season and has some of the highest potential out of our entire squad. We forget he's only 22, for a free signing he has been an enormous success. I'm not sure from reading your point if you're disputing that or agreeing with it though so possibly my fault for responding to that one!
In fairness three of those were loanee’s. Woodrow and Kent were deemed good loan’s good on their previous loans to Barnsley and Burton. Diony was a mystery to us all as I’m not sure there is even a good player in there. Garita was admitted by Cotterill as a 50k gamble, who never made it past reserves did he? Steele was a good back up, but that’s all he was and hopefully we’ve got another contender to challenge Fielding lined up. O’Neill I liked but spent most of last season in the physio room. Engvall well he fits into the Diony and Garita camp. I know it’s a waste of money but at least it’s 1.4 million (life time money to most of us) not the full 2 million as I can’t see any of the add on’s triggered. The other three worry me leaving but the two joined will hopefully step up. Reasons to be cheerful Vynar and Kelly look to me our next big profit players. I’m hoping Taylor Moore stays around the first team as well. And I’m really hoping Freddie Hinds starts to knock on the door. Like you said no need to panic yet, but that’s what us football fans are good at. But come October and we are looking shaky then I will be one of the ones critising as well.
