Use the Rugby rule and move the ball 10 yards nearer the goal. If that makes it a penalty so be it. Cheating would stop.
I am not moaning just making a suggestion. Debate is what this site is for.

Was taking the piss with the moaning comment mate <ok>

I don't have a issue with delaying a free-kick, I think it's good game management. As for moving the ball ten years, weren't they meant to do that years ago when the wall wouldn't retreat? Failed miserably if memory serves me right

While fans condone cheating nothing will be done about it. The refs simply didn't enforce that rule. Rugby refs make as many mistakes as football refs but they do enforce the rules. You rarely see dissent in rugby.

I don't condone cheating, I just don't consider delaying a free-kick cheating. I'd put in the sane category as pinching a yard when taking a throw-in or sledging another player.

I refer to that quite often

I'd love to see blatant dives (clearly no contact) get a ten game ban. I'd love to see refs get mic'd up so we can hear players being ****s and receive a ban as punishment. I'd love to see players surrounding the ref or waving an imaginary card get punished too. All more of a issue than delaying a free kick imo

That is by far the biggest difference, enforce respect for officials and the game changes straight away.

Then I think you are missing the point. The game would be better if there were no fouls. If fouls were punished more harshly there would be fewer. Allowing the offending side to delay the free kick with impunity has the opposite effect.

Agree with all that but as soon as some rules are not enforced we are on.a slippery slope. Players do take the punishment into account and rarely get second yellow cards for example. Make the punishment harsher and the better team will win more often.

There are different situations for this, when you see a ref use the foam he has already told the teams they are playing to the whistle so delaying doesn't come into it, if he doesn't use the foam the team with the ball can restart when they want/are ready so a player blocking the ball by standing in front of the kicker is unsporting and should be carded as the advantage has been stolen.

And the player knows that and expects to be booked if the the free-kick is taking but he prevents it. The referees not enforcing it is the issue you guys have.

It's a yellow card worth taking if it prevents a possible goal

If it's midway through the first half and you already have one yellow?

Why? Sorry that one's lost on me. Are you suggesting we don't currently stop the game for free kicks, corners, throw ins, penalties, injuries, player substitutions? One review given to each team captain is hardly going to add much to that. There does seem to be an irrational reaction to this which seems to be fuelled by a fear of change and progress more than anything else.

Absolutely no irrational fear of change from me, but at the same time change has to have a tangible benefit. I’ve not seen anything to convince me of this benefit yet.

Agreed. The only thing that would make Var worth all the trouble would be the prospect of game changing refereeing errors being eradicated.

    But they won't be.

I still think leave it alone and stop messing with the game, it's imperfect and that's fine by me.
