Don't get all this disrespect for Forster. He has done well for us in the past, but hit a bad patch of form....aggravated no doubt by losing confidence when the quality of the defence went down. Sure...he was dropped and we needed to replace him, but doesn't deserve the insults. He didn't suddenly decide to play badly.

He had a serious injury when the team were doing well, and by the time he came back the defence was leaking like a sieve. No wonder he lost confidence, especially with the morons in the Northam getting on his back.

That's not how I remember it. When he came back from injury he put in something like nine clean sheets out of ten and helped us into Europe. His dip in form came much later did it not? Or am I having a funny five minutes here and forgetting another injury?

 

Exactly, he is nowhere near as good as McCarthy so will be sat on the bench picking up £70k a week for doing nothing

Exactly right. His loss of confidence came around the time we lost Fonte (so early-2017) and kept changing our defensive players.

 

Yes, you’re both correct on reflection, but the point I was trying to make was that he didn’t suddenly become a bad keeper without reason, and a lot of the stick he took from the crowd should have been levelled at those in front of him.

 

At the end of the day, the whys and reasons are somewhat in the past and irrelevant now. The fact is Fraser is currently is currently sat on our bench, with no immediate prospect of any game time, whilst being one of a highest earners.

Whatever people's feelings are towards him, positive or negative, if he's not going to feature on the pitch then it would be a good thing for us if he didn't feature on our wage bill either.

It’s hardly the fans fault he wasn’t playing great.

I think he has always been pretty consistent for us actually. He just got found out when our defence started conceding more scorable opportunities.

 

My argument always has been, and I stand by this, he wasn't playing well because the fans were on his back and it shattered his confidence. The same thing has happened with Redmond too.

Well however it soured, he gave us 2 of my favourite ever seasons as a saints Fan! I'll never forget that.
He hasn't been the same the last 2 and we are able to let him go for a return on what we paid and allow McCarthy the title of first choice. I'm very happy.

 

So are you advocating a bench made up of low-wage dross then?

 

If we can get a reasonable fee for Fraser and sign a good prospect as backup for Alex then I have no problem with letting him go. As you say, whatever the reasons, he probably will never be as good as he was for his first 2 seasons with us, and he needs to be playing regularly.

True, but with one year left on his contract he can really do what he likes. We can either extend his contract (which we could have done any time before now), sell him (for maybe £3m) or let him go for free in a year (which I expect now). Forster has about 5 years on double the salary, he can only really go somewhere like Chelsea.

 

Sometimes it’s just a player starts agains somewhere fresh. That might be what Fraser needs.
