No surprise that the Ascot Derby is dominated by Ballydoyle also-rans from elsewhere. Moore has selected Delano Roosevelt, which in itself is good grounds to reject that one! Rostropovich never went a yard at Chantilly and there is no reason to see the extra two furlongs as the key to success here other than the stable’s Hunting Horn winning yesterday. Giuseppe Garibaldi is progressing the right way and may have the improvement necessary to compete. Similarly, Raa Atoll needs to step up to feature; and he has already accounted for The Queen’s runner Elector. There has to be a question about Wells Farhh Go on quick ground, which leads me to OLD PERSIAN, winner of a three-runner affair last time and stepping up in class and distance today.
The Commonwealth Cup looks like another pin-sticking job and I am going to go with Richard Fahey’s SANDS OF MALI to confirm Haydock running with Invincible Army, Emblazoned, Actress, Heartache and Unfortunately. In his Sporting Life column, Fahey considers his colt to be a Group 1 performer – we will see today.
In the Coronation Stakes, the bookies have clearly decided that Billesdon Brook’s 1000 Guineas win was a fluke (they may be wrong), so the Ballydoyle filly and the Irish 1000 Guineas winner head the market. Unbeaten Teppal won the Pouliches but that does not look like a vintage renewal. I cannot see any reason to back Clemmie, who did nothing at The Curragh, to reverse running with ALPHA CENTAURI, who will clearly be at home on the quick ground and could prove better than the Newmarket Classic winner. It is probably too much to ask of Veracious to win this first time up and the one of most interest of the rest is Threading, who slammed Dance Diva at York last time but seems to fluff her lines in the big ones.
I like Thundering Blue in the last but his style of racing (held up in rear, brought late) will make it very difficult here in a large field, so in the competition I am siding with bottom-weight course and distance winner Count Calabash to give Eve Johnson Houghton a second winner of the week.
