The Black Cats released their retained list on Thursday, leaving the club with just 13 senior players.

The likes of Lamine Kone, Papy Djilobodji, Bryan Oviedo, Wahbi Khazri and Jack Rodwell are expected to leave this summer as well, although the senior squad is complemented by a clutch of promising young talent.

That said, the need to recruit players for next season is imperative and Jack Ross is said to be scouring the free agent market.

Why Sunderland loan spell will help Ovie Ejaria cope at Rangers - Kit Symons
There are a number of former Sunderland players available on a free transfer this summer, so should the Black Cats look to re-sign some of them.

Granted, some may be unrealistic, but we take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly in this one to 11 of former Sunderland players available for nothing this summer.

    Goalkeeper - Mika
Mika only left Sunderland in January but he is set to be available on a free transfer.

The former Portugal under-21 international failed to make a single appearance for the Black Cats and despite joining Uniao de Leiria in March, he has failed to make a single appearance for the Portuguese side since.

    Right-back - Alan Hutton
Hutton enjoyed a stellar season at Aston Villa, playing 33 times for the Villans as they reached the Championship play-off final.

The 33-year-old is out of contract this summer though and given Aston Villa’s financial troubles they will not be offering him a new deal.

The former Scotland international will be a very solid signing for any football league club.

    Centre-back - Nedum Onuoha
Onuoha spent a very successful season on loan at Sunderland during the 2010/11 campaign as he helped Sunderland finish in the top half of the Premier League table.

The 31-year-old scored a memorable goal against Chelsea and he left Wearside having made a positive impression during his stay.

He returned to Manchester City but after failing to tie down a place in their first team he joined QPR in 2012.

Onuoha became the Rs captain and leaves Loftus Road after six solid years as he looks to return to the north.

    Centre-back - Modibo Diakite
Diakite arrived in Sunderland with a big reputation in Serie A, following his move from Lazio.

He made just eight appearances for the Black Cats though and was shipped out on loan to Fiorentina after just six months at the Stadium of Light.

Just a year later he was allowed to join Deportivo on a free transfer and he has since had unsuccessful spells with Cagliari, Frosinone, Sampdoria and Ternana.

He joined Serie B side Bari in October last year but has played just one minute of football since mid-March.

    Left-back - Ondrej Celustka
Celustka joined Sunderland on loan from Trabzonspor in 2013 but failed to make an impression.

The Czech Republic international made 27 appearances during his one season on Wearside but failed to win a permanent move as he returned to Turkey.

The 28-year-old has had spells with Nuremburg and Antalyaspor since, and he will leave the latter on a free transfer this summer.

    Right-wing - Ross Wallace
Wallace was part of the Sunderland side who won promotion to the Premier League under Roy Keane.

He famously set up Michael Chopra’s winning goal in their first game back in the top flight but found opportunities hard to come by in his only season in the top flight on Wearside.

He left Sunderland to join Preston. He had a five year stay at Burnley before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Scotland international helped Wednesday qualify for the Championship play-offs during his first two seasons at the club but fell out of favour last term under new boss Jos Luhukay.

Wallace is 33 now but still has a lot to offer at Championship or League One level.

    Centre-mid - Jan Kirchhoff
Kirchhoff, alongside Wahbi Khazri and Lamine Kone, revitalised Sunderland’s season following his January arrival in 2016 and helped Sunderland stave off relegation at the expense of rivals Newcastle.

But after thriving under Sam Allardyce, his well documented injury struggles returned to haunt him under David Moyes and he left the club following the Black Cats’ relegation to the Championship.

The German midfielder spent eight months without a club before joining Bolton in February of this year but he made just four appearances for the Trotters.

He is once more without a club and it is difficult to see where he turns next given his injury troubles.

    Centre-mid - Ki Sung-Yeung
The South Korea international is arguably the most talented former Sunderland player available on a free transfer this summer.

Ki enjoyed a successful season on loan at Sunderland during the 2013/14 campaign as he helped the Black Cats reach the League Cup final.

He returned to Swansea in 2014 and after four seasons he is leaving the Liberty Stadium following the Swans’ relegation from the Premier League.

Ki will be looking to remain in top flight football.

    Left-wing - David Vaughan
Vaughan’s time at Sunderland was largely underwhelming but he is fondly remembered for a stunning goal in a 3-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park.

In three seasons on Wearside he made just 59 appearances before joining Nottingham Forest.

He is now available on a free transfer and at 35 he may just have one final move before he hangs up his boots.

Which Sunderland players are out of contract in 2019?
    Forward - Darren Bent
Bent enjoyed a prolific 18 months on Wearside scoring 36 goals in 63 appearances.

He joined Aston Villa for £24million in 2011 in a move which saw his popularity on Wearside decrease drastically.

Spells at Fulham, Brighton, Derby and Burton Albion followed and he scored one of the Brewers’ goals against the Black Cats which saw their relegation to League One confirmed.

Despite his low popularity, Bent - even at 34 - is a proven goalscorer at Football League level and is worth a punt this summer.

    Forward - Dame N’Doye
N’Doye joined Sunderland on loan in January 2016 as one of four additions Sam Allardyce made to his squad.

And while Lamine Kone, Jan Kirchhoff and Wahbi Khazri’s performances helped Sunderland to achieve Premier League survival, N’Doye largely struggled.

He scored one goal in 11 appearances and returned to Trabzonspor.

He has spent the last two seasons at the Turkish club but will leave on a free transfer this summer, despite scoring 15 goals across the last two seasons.

I'd rather we spent tiny fees on promising young players than welcome these unwanted players into the fold. Been there, done that and it was ****.

One of them is still good (Ki), the rest are different shades of awful.

There's a couple who could do a job for you next year (Hutton particularly) but why bother really. Get the kids in and build for the next 2-3 years.

Onuoha would be a very good experienced CB in this league imo. We do need some experienced heads.

Onuoha and Wallace at a push. The rest were/are dreadful. (Exceptions of Ki who is totally out of our range and Kirchoff who no longer plays football)

Onuoha and Hutton for me (assuming we have cleared out most of our existing defenders).

Kirchoff and Ki would be a dream, but one gets injured and the other is way beyond us at present, sadly.

BUT, I'm hoping our new manager already has a whole raft of names on his list, of youngish players who feel they have been unlucky and have missed the boat and want the chance to show that they have what it takes to reach the top.
We can give them the chance to prove it and at the same time play in front of 30,000+ cheering Fans every week.

What an awful list, no to all of them. Ki is a decent footballer, beyond our means the rest are just about beyond hope.
