Quick links Sunderland League One Sunderland should do everything to keep Bryan Oviedo ahead of League One campaign David Nunn 17 minutes ago Sunderland are preparing their squad for a vital season and Oviedo would be an important player to keep on Wearside. please log in to view this image Sunderland's new owner Stewart Donald reiterated to Black Cats fans that there would likely be a squad overhaul ahead of one of the biggest season's in Sunderland's history. A number of departures have already gone through, with more likely to come in the next few weeks. However, despite a summer transfer overhaul, Sunderland's new boss Jack Ross will still require one or two senior players to be in a squad of what will likely be full of youngsters. And, at 28, Sunderland's Costa Rican full-back Bryan Oviedo should be one of the senior squad members that remains a permanent fixture in Ross's League One side. please log in to view this image Oviedo has made 44 appearances since joining the Black Cats in the 2017 January transfer window from Everton and has scored two goals. 37 of Oviedo's 44 appearances came in last season's Championship campaign, scoring two fantastic goals and assisting five times. Sunderland will need a number of players who can stand up to the physical demands of League One football and Oviedo certainly passed that test last season, when he played 2826 minutes - one of the Black Cats' most consistent starters. Oviedo is also an excellent set-piece taker, taking a number of his side's free kicks and corners last term and, with the direct style of play in League One, the defender could provide some class from dead ball situations. Well that's not going to happen, is it?
I'm assuming he's going to go. He's not that good to be fair, he has his positive points but he's not exactly a defensive rock.
Hope it does. Think he’s a decent full back with attacking capabilities. Needs a strong left midfielder in front of him who’s willing to defend when we haven’t got the ball though, been one of our biggest weaknesses for years
Aye, don't think he'll be happy staying here. Expecting the transfer request to go in not long after Costa Rica go out. Good for all parties I reckon.
He git some stick for saying something about wanting to play in the premier but he said he is a Sunderland player and would do the best he can. Won’t lose any sleep if he goes. There’ll be more hungry players than him for thus league
He said before the start of last season that he wanted to stay in The Prem, but no Club came for him. He was OK for us last season but not exactly someone who set the division on fire. Unless he has a blistering World Cup I wonder who might want him and will at least pay as much as he is currently earning.
I thought he'd already said he wanted to go? I could be getting confused with last season (as Poly above alludes to). I agree he'd be excellent in League One but then again so would lots of players, I'm almost certain it's irrelevant as he isn't staying.
if he want to go...he can pi55 off as well. Hopefully these new owners have seen through these money orientated mercenaries ...we will never get a better opportunity to rid this club once and for all of players who think they are bigger than the club.
Poor below average PL fb, Decent Championship fb, top class League one fb. I'd say. Do we need a top class league one fb on PL/Championship wages though, when we could get a very good league one standard on league one money?
The fact that we have avoided a massive financial 'car crash' only by the grace of an unexpected favour from Ellis Short, shouldn't close our eyes to the realities of life. SAFC is by no means out of the financial mire yet. The huge wages bill, (for this League), that is currently hanging over the Club like the Sword of Damocles could yet de-stabilise us. Yes, by keeping all of the players on our retained list, (including the ones we can't get rid of) we should walk this league. But last Season we expected them to easily keep us up and perhaps even mount a promotion challenge. Then there is the Villa example to pour the cold water of realism onto over optimism. In effect they have 'done a Leeds' and gambled heavily in the hope of promotion. It may well take them a while to recover from this unless they can find a 'sugar daddy'. WHATEVER Oviedo is being paid, and the rest of the old guard, you can bet your house that it will be way above any other players in this league. Can we afford this? Should we afford this? Remember that when we get back into The Championship we will need a war chest to ensure that we, at the very least, stay there.
We're ultimately 65m in debt no mater what people say. We do still owe Short 40m and we do owe 25m to other clubs from old transfers, Without the new investor(who isn't officially on board yet) we were heading for big trouble as soon as the end of of the season. So yeah, big wages bye bye as a matter of priority. Sooner we're running in the black the better and I think we're still quite a way off that.
