Seems we are clearing the decks and freeing up some wages. When you add up the wages of players like Gamez, Haidara, Colback (who will surely go), Saivet, Mitrovic (if he goes) it is quite a bit. Also I think people seem to ignore the idea that our wage bill last summer (even with promotion pay rises) possibly went down given the list of players who left compared to those who came in:

Perhaps. The only thing is the reported wages for some if correct were fairly hefty (for us). It all depends on the loan deals too and how they were structured. Joselu (50K), Manquillo (40K), Lejeune (35K) Murphy (25K) Merino (40k) probably all commanded what represented for us heavy wages.

The good thing is we look like we are about to free ourselves of a significant burden with those leaving. Mbemba (35k), Saivet (35K), Mitro (60K), Colback (35k-60k depending who you believe). if you threw in Gayle (40K) and Joselu (50K) potentially we'd be stripped right back pretty lean again. Charnley's comments suggest the ship has already steadied financially this season, so you have to assume that means some of wage issues have been alleviated.

I'm quietly confident we will spend a bit of money this summer despite those accounts.

Yeah, the "accounting loss" we suffered. True loss is said to be more in the region of £25-30M rather than the £90M + reported loss. I don't pretend to be an Accountant but if we genuinely lost £90M+ we would be out of business. Ashley only paid in about £15M so are we claiming we had £75M sitting around to cover the rest of the loss given we supposedly only owe Ashley money and no-0ne else?

I do agree, however, that we will/should have "a bit of money" to spend this summer. It's just my"bit" is probably bigger than your "bit". :)

Yes those dastardly accountants well known for their willingness to present fake figures and advise clients to break the law. The accounts are what they are. Our loss after tax was 45m. That is the true loss, not what some anti Ashley brigade want to pretend. The clubs accounts do not lie. Its just the reality has been too much of a bump for those saying we should have anything from 80m-120m to spend. Yes lets plunge the club into obscurity just for the craic.

We will spend what we can afford to as always.

    Fixed.

You trying to persuade me you didn't jump on the £90M+ loss reported by the Club? :)

I haven't jumped on any of these things. I simply take things for what they are. The club clearly reported the facts. A pre tax loss of 90m, 45m after tax. They showed why it had happened quite clearly unless you can't understand basic accounting. Its not the end of the world, we had a really bad year. We went down and spent heavily getting back up. It was never going to be pretty. The end result justified the gamble taken. They put their faith in the manager as the fans always purport to want. He has delivered 2 years on the bounce and that will have stabilised our accounts. Charnley has confirmed this. There is no big game or secret skullduggery going on. Its just idiot fans unable to accept reality. We are doing ok and being well run.

So If the accounts are quite clear to you can you explain what the extra 35million cost on wages is that is indicated as a provision for onerous contracts. That charge has never appeared in the accounts in previous years.
Also can you confirm that we paid up front for all the transfers in but received staggered payments for transfers out.
To me it seems clear that they have adopted a “we are going to make a loss this year so might as well take the hits on the P//L for 2016-17 and then reap the benefits in 2017-18”. Not saying they did it to fool the fans into thinking we had no money for transfers - businesses often do it. If they are going to give the market bad news better take all the hits at once so it looks good the following year.
Ashley probably realised he wouldnt be able to sell at an optimum price while we were in Championship so make sure figures for first season back in PL will maximise sales price.
However I could be wrong - I of course am not close confidante of Mike and Lee like what you are.

I think I have suggested exactly this previously. It’s not some devious plan though is it? It’s more likely a plan to help the club. The losses have to show in the accounts at some stage. As I keep saying Charnley hasn’t hid from it and has, as I’ve repeatedly said, noted we have stabilised. They perhaps aren’t fully clear in their intention but they are fully clear about what the situation is. It doesn’t matter if you spread these losses over one year, two years, or more, you have these losses. That is what some are either struggling to grasp or trying to suggest it’s done in a deliberate attempt to justify not selling or not spending on transfers. It is comical they think he gives that much of a **** about anyone else’s views. Let alone some very amateur accountants on not606 who take on board financial wisdom from The Mag.

TBF I think we are running a tight ship financially in a very challenging business to do so.

The real problem is a severe lack of creativity, innovation and ambition at the top for many years. Probably partially because Ashley underestimated what a big responsibility it is owning a football club. You have to be emotionally invested in looking after the history and the people that surround the club. We have recruited poorly in key positions which has resulted in us standing still and not improving our brand, profitability...all of that good stuff.

Luckily by managing to get Rafa in we have a manager now with all the previously mentioned qualities so we are starting to move in the right direction. It seems he's still having to to it somewhat on his own though and of he goes we are in deep as I can't see that the structure above him is capable of running the place without him proving some guidance.
