Rangers manager Smith slams Diouf media reception Rangers manager Walter Smith spoke up in defence of new signing El Hadji Diouf after the 1-0 win over Hearts. Diouf made his debut in the Scottish Premier League encounter at Ibrox, a couple of days after his transfer deadline-day loan move from Blackburn. And asked about the somewhat negative reaction to his signing, Smith said: "In Scotland, it's not unexpected, the reaction you get. "Overall I was pleased with the way he played, considering that serial killers get better publicity than he's had over the last few days". Diouf has had his brushes with controversy north and south of the border, including an incident at Celtic Park during his spell with Liverpool when he was caught on camera spitting on a Celtic fan in a Uefa Cup tie. "I heard the lad's interview on radio yesterday and he apologised for one or two of the incidents but this morning's reporting seems to have missed out the apology," Smith said. "Like everyone else in life, he's made one or two errors, he's stood up and admitted it. But in Scotland you always get a bit of over-reaction to everything and that's just the way it is. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/r/rangers/9385793.stm What's that Sir Dignity? One or two errors? He's admitted them and apologised? Serial Killers get better press? If you say so Walter, the press have a damned cheek don't they, how dare they give bad press to El Hadj Diouf.
Diouf is a fanny but Walter Smith has to stick up for the guy he just signed. He didn't sign him to work as a customer service advisor or PR guru. He's there to boot a ball around a field. Who gives a **** what he's done in the past? He's a ****ing idiot but a lot of footballers are. Personally I think he's been made a bit of a convenient scapegoat. No chance would this kind of reaction been given to say, Lee Bowyer, if he signed for Rangers Plus some of the media reaction to it has been ridiculous. Did you hear Craig Burley before the Aberdeen game the other night? Thought these pundits were supposed to at least be a bit objective? I would question his temperament far more than his past.
He seems to get more stick than Joey Barton for some reason. **** knows why. maybe its cos he has a shiney car
Am I not entitled to an opinion now? But since you asked, I despise Diouf and the fact that Rangers signed him is not going to alter my view and stop me giving opinions, especially when Dignity man is talking ****e...................again.
Nah it's because the British media are institutionally racist. If Diouf looked like Beckham he'd get away with anything he wanted. A white blonde **** will always get more leeway than a black guy from Senegal in the British press. It's a sad fact of the media here
Walter is a great man, and he's a great manager, you'd love a Walter type at Parkhead. You can't deny that what he's done since returning to Ibrox is amazing, consiering the state we were in under PLG. When Walter talks, it's usually well thought out and precise. Perhaps, he exaggerated his point, I don't know, as I don't buy papers nowadays. But the crux of the matter is that Diouf is a Rangers player now, and Smith will defend him to the hilt, as would Lennon if he signed for Celtic. Now wind your long neck in Lucy, it's embarrassing. I'm off to a meeting now, so please excuse me if I don't return your next comment.
I don't "fully" agree. Joey Barton never exactly got an easy ride (Not that he deserved one) and I don't think the Press were the ones who made Diouf out to be a baddie, his behaviour on the pitch (and off) did that. I agree though that some players - Alan Shearer springs to mind -got an awfully easy ride despite hisr wrongdoings. Beckham....not so much.
Walter is only a great man in the eyes of the Gers support but the simple fact is he's a cantankerous old drama queen at times, especially when the press don't follow his script. Then his dignity flies oot the windae. Don't expect me to tug my forelock and supplicate myself like Chick Young just because Walter has an opinion, his opinions are very much like everyone else's, wrong or right depending on the circumstances. He has no armour that shileds him from criticism despite what some misguided Gers fanms would have us believe sdo do me a favour and you wind your own neck in or don't comment at all.
I wasn't using Beckham as an example of behaviour just his media darling image. I 100% agree with you about Shearer and I'd throw Gerrard in there too. Thug of the highest calibre.
When I saw the title of this thread I though "Huff, here Dev goes again ". Dev, I think you're just posting for the sake of an argument now and it's becoming tedious. Quite simply as Venom said Diouf is a fanny and Smith has the right to stick up for him. Get over it for **** sake
