I must be honest - I'd never heard of the 3-3-1-3 formation. There's a video embedded in this link that tells you how Bielsa uses it. I have to say that it sounds really exciting, but, just like the article in the link, your thoughts do turn to our squad and who would fit into such a system. The journo suggests we need 5 players. But that's only for the 1st XI - he clearly forgot that we need squad players too as cover. Interesting times ahead. I hope. :)

So who's deffo out, & who's deffo in? Is this a huge opportunity for our hungry u23s? Lord knows ....

This is how HITC sees it with our current squad. I don't see this being a team that would bring the good times back !!

Shows you how much HITC know! They've obviously not watched the video! :)

There were a number of interesting things in the video about how he uses players - like using 2 FBs & 1 CH in the back 3. And there's us with 2 senior CBs currently, & about 7 or 8 CBs trying to burst though from the u23s! I agree with the 72 about Ayling teaming up with Pontus & another FB. Need another FB there. Could this be a lifeline for Berra if we don't sign someone? If not, he's surely gone? He's not fast enough for the wing back role. Coyle is. So's Pearce (but we don't want to burn him out, do we?). Alioski? Toughie. Will deffo be in the team IMO, but not sure if it'll be as a wide man up front, or wing back. I'm really looking forward to this close season.

Would be the end for LDB because he was sold because Brugge started to use a back 3.

Pearce and Coyle Ayling and Pontus, Alioski. Forshaw, Siaz, Pablo, Roberts, Viera, Roofe. Needs much more than that

If Roofe is the centre forward, Cooper and Dallas are in the team and Alioski a possible let’s not bother.
We all know this will never work. Fecking hell Rad must be a slow learner.

When you have skilful players with exceptional football brains and good at reading the game and exceptional discipline then maybe that formation would work but I’d fear about using it in the Championship.

I’d imagine when the opposition has the ball and assuming they were running down the wing it would call for one of the CBs to move over and a CM to drop back covering that position and even the AM to slot back covering the the guy who’s covering the CB

Play against any decent coach and he’d have a team pulling us all over the place. I read what Bielsa called his philosophy on one article which is actually a very good read and interestingly it stated he does also play a version of 4-2-3-1.

    Anyway....
Bielsa described his philosophy as being composed of four basic tenets: focus, mobility, rotation and repenitización — a musical term meaning something akin to improvisation – all of which have formed the basis of seemingly any aspiring coach to have come into contact with him.

My biggest fear over all this.... We sell players and set ourselves up for this 3-3-1-3 formation, Bielsa leaves, either walks out as Orta interferes, he finds the Championship a whole different ball game or gets sacked and suddenly we could be very short on defenders and conventional ones like RB and LB

I’d say it’s crucial we keep players like Coyle and Pearce for the future, I don’t see either of them in the possible back 3. As it stands my back three would Be Berardi, Pontus, Ayling, both Berardi and Ayling more than capable of covering the touchline.

I think that’s the easiest three to pick are the defenders, front four Saiz, Hernandez, Alioski look good to me but we need a better striker. Right and left midfield, we have lots of options but are any good enough?

Let them all go if they want. Only Ayling and Saiz are good enough. Hernandez is too old. The rest not good enough....
Wouldn’t cry if all of them left as not one is a mercurial talent regardless of formation.

Haha it wasn't long ago you lot were crying out for wide men and a couple of good fast wingers, now your discussing playing all through the middle <laugh>
3-3-1-3 youll get murdered by any fast free flowing football side in this league <ok>
your wingers have to be prepared to cover back when your LB and RB are running forward and to be able to do this the right players are needed Pablo and Alioski really <doh>

Wow looks like he can scare the shyte out of players but repetions and chasing down shows why his high line game can work

Haha indeed! You didny watch the video, did you? Don't remember it being mentioned that the system results in you playing through the middle. Be a bit of a waste if you did, what with 2 wingbacks & 2 wide attackers.

Good article. I did get the feeling from this article though that the 3-3-1-3 formation gave way to 4-2-3-1. It's not clear, but almost looks like he's abandoned it. Curious.

Other thing I liked was this paragraph:

Another innovation of the Argentinian tactician was to set homework for his players, encouraging them to study tape of upcoming opponents, find solutions and present their findings back to the team. This was seen as a way to foster a degree of independent problem solving from his players, engaging them mentally as well as physically.

Apparently they've known each other for years, so Orta knows what he's taking on. His job's on the line if this doesn't work out. He says hopefully. :D
