The staggering distances Bristol City fans will have to travel next season The Robins will clock up some serious mileage on the roads in the 2018/19 season. After the conclusion of the play-offs on Bank Holiday weekend, all 24 Championship teams have now been confirmed ahead of next season. Bristol City fans now know where they will be travelling next year, and will be able to plan their trips when the fixtures are announced on the 21 June. Tom Cairney’s goal gave Fulham promotion, meaning Aston Villa will remain in the second-tier for a third successive season. On Sunday, Rotherham overcame Shrewsbury in extra time to ensure their return to the league at the first attempt. Where is City’s closest away trip? After Severnside rivals Cardiff were promoted last season, Bristol City fans will have to travel significantly further for their closest away day when they take a trip down the M4 to Reading. It will be a 79-mile trip to the Madejski, with the second closest ground being Swansea’s Liberty Stadium (83) and The Hawthorns being the next closest (88). That is followed by fellow Midlands’ grounds St Andrew’s (90) and Villa Park (96). The promotion of Wigan (171) and Blackburn (193) will add to the mileage of Bristol City fans as they will have to make a +200-mile round trip, 18 times next season. What is the furthest City fans will have to travel? Despite the relegation of Sunderland, City’s furthest trip will still be to the North East, but this time it will be slightly closer when they make the 264-mile journey to Middlesbrough. Norwich City is the next furthest and will require a 241-mile trip to Carrow Road. City fans will also have to be waking up in the early morning when they prepare to travel to Hull City (227) and Leeds (214). A trip to face Ipswich at Portman Road means that there are five clubs over 200 miles away. Will be there any new opponents? Swansea City are the newest opponents, when they will face the Robins for the first time since 2011. Steve Cotterill was in charge of the side when they last played West Brom in the FA Cup, but haven’t faced the Baggies in the league since 2010, when manager Lee Johnson was playing. Stoke City last came up against Johnson’s side in the league in 2008, but the Potters were one of the three Premier League victims of City’s Carabao Cup run last season. The newly promoted teams are familiar foes of Bristol City, after Wigan, Blackburn and Rotherham all immediately returned to the Championship after being relegated last season. How far will City fans travel next season? If travelling to every City away game, fans will clock up a total of 7,224 miles following the Robins next season and below lies the list of distances for every away trip next year. Reading – 79 Swansea City – 83 West Brom – 88 Birmingham City – 90 Aston Villa – 96 Brentford – 112 QPR – 114 Millwall – 122 Stoke City – 126 Derby County – 136 Nottingham Forest – 139 Sheffield United – 180 Sheffield Wednesday – 181 Wigan – 171 Rotherham – 176 Bolton – 182 Preston – 192 Blackburn – 193 Ipswich – 206 Leeds – 214 Hull City – 227 Norwich City – 241 Middlesbrough - 264 https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport...taggering-distances-bristol-city-fans-1618723
Huge commitment from some fans in terms of time and hard cash. Respect to those guys and gals. I admit to misreading the heading originally and thought it referred to the pubs they frequented before games.
Closest ground is 10 minutes walk - the County Ground - I live in Swindon! Moved here for work in 1997
Don’t mean to nit pick , but Swindon , as far as I’m aware , aren’t likely to be a league opponent any time soon.
True - unless we draw them in the cup. Closest league ground to me would be Reading then. According to Google Maps, the Madjeski stadium is 41 miles from my house. Ashton Gate is 43 miles away from me according to the same source.
My house is 154 miles from the Cardiff city stadium. It's why I watch more away games than home. I did used to live just over 6 miles from Ashton gate though I never went there.
My mum lives on the Vale of Glamorgan grounds so I’ve got to pull into the same driveway as Crapdiff’s training ground. Every time I see that badge a bit of bile comes up into my mouth.
Too busy playing rugby on a Saturday afternoon to watch football at the time. Saw Cardiff play the gas at eastville back in the day (long before I lived in brizzle) and played against Bristol rugby second team down on the memorial ground.
