I'm a bit late to this, but I have to give my 2p worth. Ice in whisky is a heathen thing to do - the coldness kills the flavour and aroma. Water is great for opening the flavours though - especially in 50% plus ABV cask strength malts. It is also the only time I could ever suggest buying mineral water as the lack of chlorine means no flavour impairment. Also if you can get the source water originally used to make the whisky then even better. I'm going to Islay soon and will be bringing back a good few litres of the water from there just for adding to whisky. Drawn straight from the streams - looks like tea due to the peat bogs on the island.
