I'd forgotten those debates. He actually had very little footballing ability, how he made himself into an effective premier league midfielder was a massive testimony to his hard work and resilience. He couldn't pass, laterally didn't run around, no flair whatsoever, but always first name on teamsheet for me. I don't think I swayed from that?? Every team needs one! Still hope for me yet.
Daily Mail Sports Personality of the Year is quite an accolade even if Piers Morgan is the judge. Is he still the only player ever to captain one club in every division?
I remember my early days on 606 , I spent nearly every day argueing about Ashbee ,often hours at a time defending him( I didn't have much to do back then ) and it felt a very lonely place at times as there wasn't much support, where was you all back then when I needed you
Ash, the 14th best captain in world football history, this kid knew his onions... https://www.thesportster.com/soccer/top-20-greatest-captains-in-soccer-history/
Thanks for putting that up, first time to see it, must have missed it at the time. What an great piece it is.
That's a well thought out list, some great names on there, and Ash deservedly amongst them. P.S. Not sure about Maradona as captain, cheat more like.
No one can deny Maradona's footballing skills. He was real class but he was a cheating little **** and still refuses to come clean. He is in the Ehab class of ****ery
I'm more than happy to admit after every promotion I'd say how good Ashbee was but I didn't think he'd make the step up. But I was always happy that he proved me wrong. I've never met him, I once had the chance at an event I was at but I was a nervous wreck and couldn't bring myself to speak to him. I just kept gazing at him across the room like a love struck teenager.
