20 years ago today we lost on Pens to Charlton in that epic Playoff final. Feck me that's scared shyte out of me. I can't believe it seems only about 5 years ago since I watched that game as a 1 year old .
I watched that in Sky last night. Thry were talking to Micky Gray as well. Poor bugger. I just remember being really proud of them on the day but as gutted as ****. Next season we won the Championship with something like 105-111 points.
That result could have gone one of 2 days the following season but luckily we gained strength from it and came back stronger.
On a sidenote Mendonaca was class. His career was cut short through injury. I can't believe he was a massive Sunderland fan from the area and none of our scouts found him as a kid!
I'm sure I heard that Reidy took Gray into his own home afterwards for a while and got his head back together.
Probably the most gutted I have ever been over Sunderland. Pleased that I will never feel like that again over a game of football.
Totally agree marra... I was distraught. Couldn’t face going home to Darlo so I got off the train at Peterboro and got hammered in a pub that I ended up sleeping in courtesy of an understanding landlord. Got home the following afternoon and my missus avoided talking to me around the house as I sat and watched a rerun of the match on Sky... hurling abuse at at Dichio & Perez. That horrible shirt was bought the day before the final, wore on the day and has never seen the light of day again! 20 years eh..... ****in unbelievable

Watched the match in the Wheatsheaf pub ! very hot day I remember. I duffed going to Wembley because of the Swindon disaster 8 years before. We should have went up instead of penalties as we finished above Charlton. The latest one kicks of in about 10 mins, and I have a bet on Fulham to win 1-0 and Mitrovic the first scorer, plus tonight Ronaldo to score and a 1-0 win a fiver on that match.
